Jacks girls golf team opens season at Monticello meet

The early spring has provided a boost to the Bemidji girls golf team and the Lumberjacks will open their campaign 12:30 p.m. today at Monticello.

"Because of the good weather we've had four days of practice on the course and we are way ahead of where we normally are at this time of the season," said BHS coach Jeff Nelson.

Making the trip today will be seniors Emily Frosaker, Shelby Sauer, Marissa Loch and Aimee Sandquist plus juniors Megan Phelps and Erin Buckanaga.

"We haven't had much chance to qualify within the team so I decided to start the season with the letterwinners from last year," Nelson said. "I believe this group can perform well and if we could score under 400 with our top four golfers it would be a good start to the season."

A year ago Bemidji finished fourth among 17 teams at the meet with a team score of 399. Grand Rapids took the championship by shooting 379. In between were Albany at 382 and Spring Lake Park at 384.

"It's time to open the season," Nelson said. "It's time to get the tournament jitters out of the way. The kids all have potential and as we get the experience in tournament situations we should improve.

"At some point during the season I would like to see us shoot about 340 and I believe we have the talent to do that," Nelson added.
