Polar Plunge takes 7th dip

The Bemidji Jaycees will host the seventh annual Polar Plunge at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, east of Paul and Babe on Lake Bemidji.

Registration will be held at 1:30 p.m. and all plungers are required to sign a waiver at the event. Plunge participants are also encouraged to raise money by collecting pledges from friends, family and co-workers. Money raised will go to the Bemidji Special Olympics. Pledge forms are available at the Bemidji Chamber of Commerce and Bluewater Outdoors. All pledges are due on the day of the plunge and participants are responsible for amounts on their pledge forms.

Participants who raise a minimum of $50 will receive a souvenir T-shirt at the event. Those who raise $150 will receive a hooded sweatshirt and a T-shirt and participants who raise $300 or more will receive a T-shirt, hooded sweatshirt and commemorative beach towel.

The Beaver Pride Hardwater Classic Ice Fishing Contest will begin at 11:15 a.m. with a rules meeting and continue until 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, on Lake Bemidji.

Registration in advance is $25 per person or $15 for students. Registration on the day of the event is $30. Tickets can be ordered online at or payment and registration forms can be mailed to Beaver Pride, 1500 Birchmont Drive N.E. No. 17, Bemidji, MN 56601.

This year, participants will be allowed to use portable fish houses and pop-up shelters during the contest.

The categories are Perch, Walleye and Northern Pike. Participants will receive a ticket for each fish caught. The tickets will be entered into a drawing to win a custom built 8-foot-by-12-foot fish house. Cash prizes will be awarded for the top three fish, and random prizes will be awarded for the first 50 fish caught. A drawing for a 2009 Polaris Side-by-Side all-terrain vehicle, donated by the Bemidji Sports Centre and Polaris, will be held at the conclusion of the tournament.

A Hardwater Classic Kickoff will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at Keg 'n' Cork, at which time participants can register.

The Build Your Own Sled Derby, sponsored by Boy Scout leaders of the Paul Bunyan District, will be held during Polar Daze at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Tourist Information Center.

Children ages 5-12 are invited to make a sled out of cardboard, plastic, wood or inner tubes. Participants will compete to win first-, second- and third-place medals in each age group. They will also be able to try out their sleds at Library Park.
