Cass Lake man stabbed twice Saturday

An 18-year-old Cass Lake man was stabbed twice in the chest early Saturday morning in Cass Lake.

The suspect in the stabbing, Todd William Pemberton Jr., 18, of Cass Lake, was charged Tuesday in Beltrami County District Court with one count of first-degree assault causing great bodily harm and one count of second-degree assault using a dangerous weapon and causing substantial bodily harm. Both charges are felonies.

He remained in Beltrami County Jail Wednesday.

A NCRH spokeswoman said Wednesday that there was no information available on the victim's condition.

According to the criminal complaint, Beltrami County Sheriff's Office and Leech Lake Tribal Police responded at 1:30 a.m. to the Indian Health Services Hospital in Cass Lake in response to an assault. Medical personnel said the victim said he was stabbed twice.

He was stabilized and transported via Bemidji Ambulance Service to NCRH for emergency surgery, according to the sheriff's report.

Police learned that the victim had been taken to the Cass Lake hospital from the 5000 block of Kappes Lane in Cass Lake, according to the complaint. The owner of the residence said she woke up to a male telling her that a man had been stabbed and needed transportation to the hospital.

The male told police that he was inside the residence when someone came and knocked on the door, according to the complaint. When he opened the door, he said he saw the victim holding his bloodied chest.

The victim was then taken to the hospital by private vehicle, according to the complaint.

After the victim was stabilized at NCRH, he told police that he was at a residence on the 4900 block of Kappes Lane with six other individuals.

He said they were drinking before he and the suspect began exchanging words. The verbal dispute then turned into a mutual fight, according to the complaint.

The fight ended. Later, the victim said he tried to speak to Pemberton, but he responded by stabbing the victim twice in the chest, according to the complaint. The victim then fled the residence to seek medical attention.

The victim suffered "significant" injuries to his lungs and internal organs, according to the complaint.

A witness told police he saw the mutual fight and confirmed that he saw Pemberton twice strike the victim in the chest after the fight had ended, according to the complaint.

Pemberton told police he could not remember what happened but said others told him that he stabbed the victim.
