Northern Liquor to remain private

Northern Liquor will be "grandfathered in" and remain a private business following the completion of annexation.

Bemidji City Manager John Chattin and City Attorney Al Felix stated the city's intent during a joint meeting of city and township officials Wednesday night.

Northern Liquor, located on Bemidji Avenue North in Northern Township, is within the ring of properties that will become eligible for annexation into the city of Bemidji in 2010.

But, Bemidji does not allow private liquor stores within the city limits, which meant the city could "grandfather in" the business and allow it to remain a private operation, or purchase the establishment.

"We're not buying it," Chattin said.
