Gas leak briefly detours traffic through Park Rapids

Several blocks of Park Rapids were cordoned off Tuesday afternoon when workers trenching a residential sewer line struck a clearly marked gas line, sending a brief vapor of gas into the air.

The incident occurred on the 600 block of Park Avenue South shortly after 1 p.m. Several law enforcement agencies and the Park Rapids Fire Department responded, keeping spectators a safe distance away. Park Avenue is Highway 71, the main north-south artery through Park Rapids. Vehicles were detoured several blocks around the site.

Firefighters expressed some frustration that the situation had occurred since orange flags marked the gas line's location from the house.

The gas leak was quickly contained and the crews resumed working.
