Itasca County prosecutor seeks to certify 17-year-old to adult court
Darrek Jerome Porter, 17, of Deer River, was charged Jan. 13 in Itasca County Juvenile Court with two counts of felony second-degree murder of Terrell Lee Wilson, 17, of Ball Club, and three counts of felony second-degree assault of three other males with a dangerous weapon.
Itasca Attorney John Muhar has petitioned the court to certify the case from juvenile court to district court. A certification and probable cause hearing is scheduled for March 2. Meanwhile, Porter is being held in secure detention in Arrowhead Juvenile Center in Duluth.
According to the criminal complaint, at about 4 a.m. Jan. 11, Itasca County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a stabbing in Ball Club. Hospital officials in Deer River and Duluth reported that Wilson had been stabbed in the head and was pronounced dead.
The complaint states that Porter and two companions were walking along the road when they encountered several other people walking on the other side of the road. A fight ensued and several people were injured.
