The Bemidji High School varsity high kick and jazz dance teams will travel to Sauk Rapids, Minn., to compete in Saturday's Section 4AA Tournament.

The competition will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School.

Head coach Krista Grover said she expects the teams to do fairly well, but that the competition will be tough.

"Our section's really tight," she said. "We're all really close when it comes to scoring."

Grover said scoring is based on different criteria under technology, execution, choreography and presentation.

All varsity dance teams in Section 4AA are invited to compete at sectionals. Four high-kick teams and three jazz teams will advance to the state competition, which is Feb. 13-14 at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

"Our teams always go down to watch whether we advance or not," Grover said.

For sectionals, the BHS junior varsity teams as well as a "good crowd" of parents and fans plan to travel to Sauk Rapids to support the BHS varsity teams, she added.

While the season began in mid-fall, Grover said the BHS dance teams have been preparing for it for many months.

"The season's from October to February, but the girls train all summer for this and they train in the fall," she said.

She said the varsity high kick team's routine, titled "Cold as Ice," is a high-energy number. The varsity jazz team's routine, titled "Talk to Me," is more technically difficult than last year's routine, she added.

One week after sectionals, the BHS dance teams will host their annual dance show. The show will be held at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 7 in the BHS Main Gymnasium. It will feature the BHS varsity and junior varsity dance teams, Bemidji Middle School dance teams and Bemidji State University dance team, as well as dancers from Just For Kix, First City Dance Studio and Suzy and Hondo's Dance Studio.
