Whether investigating wintry road conditions in the early morning hours or helping a student find the correct bus, Greg Liedl has been responding to the transportation needs of the Bemidji School District and beyond for 10 years.

The Minnesota Association of Pupil Transportation has recognized Liedl, the Bemidji School District's transportation coordinator, as its 2008 Transportation Administrator of the Year. He received the award Friday at the Minnesota School Bus Operators Association-MAPT Conference in Mankato.

"It's a nice piece of recognition for the amount of hours that transportation directors put in," he said, noting that long hours are the nature of the job. "My minimum day is 10 hours."

Bemidji School District Superintendent Jim Hess and other district administrators nominated Liedl for the award.

"He is the absolute best transportation coordinator in the state of Minnesota," Hess said. "He deserves the award."

Hess said the district is fortunate to have Liedl in Bemidji.

"He is so knowledgeable of every aspect of his work," Hess said. "His job is so complex, but he just does it so well."

With a fleet of 80 buses, the district transports its own students as well as students attending three local charter schools and three local private schools.

"We have 18 buildings that I connect," Liedl said.

Besides transporting students to and from school, the district transports students for sports and other activities on both weekdays and weekends.

As part of Beltrami County's Emergency Management Team, the district's Transportation Department is also available to provide buses in emergencies, such as evacuations.

Summer also brings activity. Liedl said the Transportation Department provides busing for summer school and programs as well as for Concordia Language Villages.

Liedl became the district's transportation coordinator in November 1999. He moved to Bemidji from Alexandria, where he was the transportation coordinator for two years and the safety manager for two years before that for the Alexandria School District. Liedl also was a North Dakota state trooper for 14 years.

In 2005 and 2006, Liedl served as the MAPT president.
