2009 Brrrrmidji Polar Daze: Time to celebrate winter
The 2009 Brrrrmidji Polar Daze are just around the corner.
Melissa Hoover of the Bemidji Area Chamber of Commerce said Polar Daze is a week of events celebrating the culture of winter fun.
"Why not embrace winter since we have it?" noted Hoover, special events coordinator for the Chamber, which is facilitating Polar Daze.
Bemidji's annual winter celebration will feature a blend of indoor and outdoor events.
Polar Daze will begin Saturday morning with the 5K Polar Challenge Run/Walk, which will start and finish at First Lutheran Church.
Several other Polar Daze events are also scheduled Saturday at the Lake Bemidji waterfront, including the new Beaver Pride Hardwater Classic ice fishing tournament.
The tournament will be held on Lake Bemidji with about 2,000 holes drilled for anglers.
In past years, Beaver Pride has held its Winter Golf Classic on Lake Bemidji during Polar Daze. This year the golf tournament will be held March 7.
Other waterfront events set for Saturday are Broomball on Ice, Build Your Own Sled Derby and the Polar Plunge.
The Polar Plunge, held in the morning in past years, will be held in the afternoon Saturday.
"That was moved so broomball participants can also take part in the Polar Plunge," Hoover said.
Hoover also said the Build Your Own Sled Derby, sponsored by Area Boy Scout Leaders of the Paul Bunyan District, is not just for Boy Scouts. All children ages 5-12 are invited to make a sled out of cardboard, plastic, wood or inner tubes for the contest and sliding event.
Also Saturday, Headwaters Science Center will hold its Star Lab and Brigid's Cross Irish Pub will award the winners of its Ugly Sweater Contest.
The 2009 Bridal Expo and Fashion Show will be held Sunday at a new venue - Bemidji High School. In past years, the event was held at Bemidji State University.
The Taste of Northern Minnesota also has a new home this year. The event will be held Jan. 22 in BSU's Beaux Arts Ballroom. It previously was held at Northern Inn Hotel and Suites, which is no longer open.
Also new to the "Taste" this year will be free valet parking. Attendees can pull up in front of the Beaux Arts Ballroom to take part in this service.
On Jan. 23, the Montebello Niteski will kick off in the evening on the lighted Montebello Ski Trails.
Also, the BHS Vocalmotive Show Choir will hold dinner shows Jan. 23-25 in the BHS Commons. A show choir alumni reception will be held Jan. 24 at BHS.
Back on the ice, this time on Lake Irving, the Bemidji Classic Vintage Snowmobile Race event will be held Jan. 24-25.
