Bemidji State falls in Ledyard Classic final

The six game winning streak is over as the Bemidji State men's hockey team fell to host Dartmouth 4-2 in the final of the Ledyard National Bank Classic Monday in Hanover, N.H.

The Beavers fell behind 2-0 near the mid-way point of the game and were unable to recover. BSU was able to cut the lead to 2-1 in the second period, but a late goal with only 38 seconds remaining in the period gave Dartmouth a big two goal lead entering the third.

Dartmouth then followed up with the dagger, scoring with only 22 seconds gone in the third period to build an insurmountable three goal lead.

The Beavers then played their best hockey of the night in the remaining minutes and closed to 4-2 with just under three minutes left. But that was to be all for the Beavers who lost for the first time since late November.

The Beavers applied the pressure down the stretch, out-shooting the Big Green 14-6 in the final 20 minutes. But Dartmouth goalie Jody O'Neill was up to the challenge and made several big stops to preserve the lead.

"We obviously played with a lot of desperation in the third period," said BSU head coach Tom Serratore. "We had the urgency, but it was too late. We need to play the first period with that same type of urgency.

"Dartmouth has a darn good hockey team -- they are big, strong and fast. It's tough when you're down 4-1 to a team like that. They were able to play a different style with the lead -- there was a lot more room out there in that third period."

The Beavers had two good opportunities to score first in the opening period, getting a couple of power play chances in the first nine minutes. Dartmouth killed both, however, and took a 1-0 lead at 11:34 as Connor Shields scored on a one-timer past BSU goalie Matt Dalton.

Dartmouth made it 2-0 at 8:28 of the second as Connor Goggin scored a power play goal off an assist from Peter Boldt.

The Beavers fought back with a goal about four minutes later. At the very end of a power play opportunity, senior Matt Francis was stationed at the left post and took a nice pass from Brandon Marino. Francis buried the shot and suddenly it was a game at 2-1.

But just when the Beavers were feeling good about possibly entering the third period being down by only a goal, Dartmouth struck. Matt Reber scored on a rebound off a shot from Kyle Reeds with just 38 seconds left in the second.

The Beavers entered the third knowing they needed a goal quickly to have a chance. Just the opposite happened as Dartmouth's Josh Gilliam scored off a fine three way passing play just 22 seconds into the third.

The Beavers got a power play opportunity with 3:49 left in the period and Serratore pulled Dalton for the extra attacker. The strategy worked as freshman defender Brad Hunt scored on a bomb from the point at 17:04.

But that was all the scoring for the night as the Beavers fell to 8-8-0 on the year while the 20th ranked Big Green improved to 8-4-0.

O'Neill got the win in net for Dartmouth, making 25 saves. Dalton took the loss and ended with 23 saves.

Bemidji State returns to action Friday at The Glas for the start of a home and home series against North Dakota.
