BHS soccer teams fall to Moorhead, Hillcrest

Moorhead took advantage of Bemidji defensive lapses to score three early goals Tuesday and go on to a 3-1 victory at the Middle School field in girls soccer.

It completed a home and home sweep for the Spuds who took the season opener at Moorhead 2-1.

It also dropped Bemidji to 0-4 in Section 8AA play and 3-6 overall.

Things get no easier tomorrow when they play at East Grand Forks against the defending Lakes to Prairie champion before going to Apollo Saturday.

The Spuds controlled play by more than the final margin would indicate, out shooting Bemidji 28-14 and putting 23 on goal to Bemidji's six.

The visitors scored with 3:19 gone when Ashley Heinz was left unmarked in the crease to drive a short range shot past Nicole Ramos.

It became 2-0 at 17:21 when Chelsea Klemetson drilled an open 20 yarder from the left side to the upper right hand corner .

And at 23:34 Hannah Casselton took a long lead pass behind the Bemidji defense and came in alone on Ramos to connect from 10 yards.

That was to be it for the Spuds. But it was enough.

Bemidji put only one shot on goal during the first half when out shot 16-5.

As in their three most recent games, Bemidji came out with renewed energy after the break and got off 11 shots.

But Moorhead had 15 despite playing the final 32 minutes short handed after drawing a red card at 8:57.

They still kept Bemidji away from the box for the most part and kept up a steady pressure on Ramos. Only some stellar goal tending kept the score from mounting higher.

Bemidji prevented the shutout in the final two minutes when Kara Rich came up with a loose ball in the crease to beat Sammy Jacobson with Sarah Eaton getting the feed on a corner kick..

Jacobson ended with five stops on the game. Ramos had a season high 20.

Hillcrest Acad. 3, Jacks 1

Hillcrest Academy scored twice in the second half Tuesday to hand the Bemidji boys soccer team a 3-1 soccer setback at Fergus Falls.

It completed a home and home sweep for the Comets and cemented their lead in the Lakes to Prairie Conference.

The loss dropped Bemidji to 3-6-2 overall and 2-3-2 in league play.

But Nehemiah Choi tied the game in the final 30 seconds of the period and Bemidji never regained control.

Goals by Andreas Saevig and Choi in the second half cemented the Hillcrest lead.

Kevin Larson had 22 stops in the Bemidji net. Hector Lemus had only eight for Hillcrest.

The B Team came closer but lost 5-3 when Hillcrest scored the final three goals of the game.

The Comets had won the first game at Bemidji 5-1.
