Clerk: Teen who drowned in hotel pool had been drinking

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) -- The night clerk at a Bloomington hotel where a 17-year-old drowned says the teen was apparently intoxicated while in the pool.

Usman Mian says he was was worried about 17-year-old Joe Viereck, who was sitting alone in the pool after midnight Tuesday.

Mian says Viereck appeared to be drunk and that Mian suggested that he rejoin his friends who had returned to their rooms at the Days Inn on Normandale Boulevard. Mian says the teenager responded in slurred words that he didn't want to leave the pool.

Mian later found Vierech at the bottom of the pool about 30 minutes later.

Police Commander Jim Ryan called the drowning "totally preventable."
