Boys hockey: Jacks rally to beat Monticello

The Bemidji Lumberjacks boys hockey team rallied for three unanswered goals in the second period Friday night to hand Monticello a 4-2 setback at the John Glas Fieldhouse.

It was the second win for the Jacks in three starts and dropped the Stars to 1-2.

Bemidji faces a bigger target in its next start Thursday, night, hosting the Moorhead Spuds at Nymore Gardens. Apollo closes the week Saturday at the same time and site.

Sophomore Mike Rees and senior Dylan Wizner divided the four Bemidji goals, Rees getting the tying goal early in the second period and Wizner the game winner seven minutes later. Bemidji grew stronger as the game wore on, dominating the final period by a far larger margin than the 9-7 shots on goal would indicate.

Junior Brett Dokken made its first start in goal, rejecting 26 shots. Trent Maurer had 28 stops for the visitors.

The fast paced game found no holds barred through the contest, with 12 of the 16 penalties assessed in the first two periods.

Bemidji connected once in six tries on the power play while blanking the Stars on their six chances.

Wizner broke the scoring ice at 10:12, converting a Jesse Nemgar feed with Robbie Hannon off for a hold.

But the visitors got it back after only 31 seconds when Shay Klitzke connected with a 10 foot blast from the right side at the end of a 2 on 1 rush.

Monticello outshot the Jacks 11-9 in the period.

Russell Johnson gave the Stars their only lead of the game early in the second stanza, again at the end of a 2 on 1 break, with Brian Karg getting the assist.

Again the lead was short lived as Rees scored his first goal 20 seconds later off feeds from Matt Hietala and Chris Blotske.

That came after another three-man rush that overpowered the Stars defense.

It took seven more minutes before Wizner broke the tie off a Rylee Curb feed, again at the end of an odd man rush.

And Rees put the icing on the cake at 15:34, again from a Blotske feed, to end the scoring.

Bemidji held a 14-10 shots edge in the session.

The third period was scoreless but not without its share of action as Bemidji kept heavy pressure on the Monticello defense throughout the 17 minutes.

Maurer held his ground, however, and refused a to allow another score.

Each side killed off one power play in the period, Steve Young drawing a 2 + 10 for checking from behind.

Each side drew coincidentals in the final two minutes.

B Team ties 2-2

The B Team remained unbeaten fighting to a 2-2 overtime tie with  Monticello. Kevin Larson and Lucas Phillips had the Bemidji goals.

Theo Anderson made only 15 stops while Ben Mentzel kicked aside 32 Bemidji shots.

Wade Chiodo's forces are 2-0-1 and also face Moorhead and Tech this week.

"I thought we played better as the game wore along," said Coach Roger Mischke. " The third period was our best of the night. Our young kids had a very good night which bodes well for the future."
