Boy arrested after pursuit

A 15-year-old boy is in custody following a high-speed chase through downtown Bemidji.

The boy led law enforcement personnel on a high-speed chase down Division Street West/Fifth Street Northwest after 9 p.m. Sunday.

The chase ultimately ended about 9:30 p.m. when the boy, who had left the Northwest Minnesota Juvenile Center, crashed a stolen car into a tree outside of the Bemidji Fire Hall, according to Bemidji Police Sgt. Robert Lehmann. The boy fled on foot from the scene and was arrested northwest of the VA Clinic, Lehmann said.

The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office initially received a report regarding a stolen vehicle at 9:08 p.m. Sunday from the 2100 block of Division Street West. The stolen car was reported to be a 1997 Honda Accord, according to Sheriff Phil Hodapp.

The incident soon turned into a high-speed chase call when the boy was clocked by a police officer going 80 to 90 mph, Lehmann said.

The boy also intentionally swerved at a squad car, and the officer driving the vehicle was able to avoid a collision, Lehmann said.

The boy, who was not identified due to his age, remains in custody. No one was injured in the incident.
