Sheriff: Cause of death determined to be suicide
The death of a man whose body was found on Aug. 8 in a wooded area on the 6600 block of Nature Road Northwest was caused by suicide.
According to a press release from the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, human remains were found hanging from a dead tree near a deer stand in Eckles Township after someone called to report having found a body.
The body was sent to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office, which conducted an autopsy and confirmed the identity Tuesday through dental records, the release said.
The man has been identified as Daniel James Burnside Peet, 21, the release said.
Peet was suspected of assaulting Randy Seifert on June 13, and witnesses of the alleged assault told police that Peet believed he had killed Seifert during the assault, the release said.
Peet's belief that he had killed Seifert was confirmed through a suicide note he left at the scene where his body was found, the release said.
It was apparent to law enforcement that the body had been at the scene for several weeks, the release said. Peet had not been seen since the alleged assault in June, the release said.
Seifert has since recovered from the injuries he suffered during the alleged assault, the release said.
