Eugene William Seelye Sr., 83

Eugene William Seelye Sr., 83, of Bena, died Friday, August 3, 2007, at his home in Bena.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Deer River, Minn., with Rev. Paul Larson officiating. A wake will begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Bena Community Center and will continue until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Bena under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Anton Treuer, David Treuer, Micah Treuer, Josh Seelye, Nathan Seelye Sr., Jerome "Sam" Cleveland Jr., Justin Seelye and Jesse Seelye.

Honorary pallbearers will be all of his friends and family.

He was born on March 1, 1924, to Walter and Emma (Lyons) Seelye in Bena. He was raised and educated in Bena and attended high school in Boy River, Minn. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day, and fought all the way into Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge, where he was injured in combat. He received the Combat Infantryman medal and one Battle Star. After leaving the army hospital in 1945, he returned to Bena. He married Luella Matthews on Jan. 31, 1946, in Federal Dam. He worked construction and as a logger. He worked in the U.S. Forest Service, for 20 years until his retirement in 1971 when he was injured on the job. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunting, snowmobiling, riding ATV, ricing and berry picking. He enjoyed electronics, especially CB radios, and video-taping family events. He enjoyed reading, especially his Bible and books on history. He enjoyed listening to country music. He was a member of the American Legion and the Disabled Veteran's of America. He loved spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of Bena; sons, David (Tracy Gale) Seelye of Sugar Point, Minn., Lance (Jennifer Waye) Seelye of Bena; daughter, Margaret "Peggy" Treuer of Bemidji; brothers, Jack (Rose) Seelye of Bena, Irving "Honey" (Margie) Seelye of Bena; and sister, Lorraine "Mickey" Maijala of Steamboat Springs, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Eugene "Sonny" Seelye Jr.; daughters, Barbara Cleveland and Gloria Jean Seelye; brothers, Walter "Boob" Seelye Jr. and Earl Seelye Sr.; sister, Irene Kirt; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.
