Bemidji City Council action

Among notable action taken at the Bemidji City Council meeting Monday:

Alley vacation

The council held the second reading of an ordinance that would authorize the city to vacate an alley between Grant and McKinley avenues southeast and Third and Fourth streets southeast. First Assembly of God church would give the city a 30-foot right-of-way easement on the west side of Grant Avenue Southeast for street and utility improvements and the city would vacate the alley.

ACTION: No action necessary.

HRDC meeting

The council considered setting a meeting with the Headwaters regional Development Commission to discuss a potential arrangement that would have the HRDC act as the project facilitator on the events center.

ACTION: The council consensus was to hold a work session meeting at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, in the council chambers at City Hall with HRDC representatives.

Additional CSL study

The council considered having Wayzata-based Conventions, Sports and Leisure International conduct a second feasibility study on the proposed events center.

ACTION: The council voted unanimously to delay consideration of a second study.

Schematic designs

The council discussed whether the design team should continue working on schematic plans that include the potential for adding to the events center a second sheet of ice and/or a convention center in the future.

ACTION: The council consensus was that the schematic plans should continue as planned.

Affirmative Action plan

The council considered the adoption of the Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity Plan. The city is required to adopt such a plan every two years to be eligible for various state and federal grants; the last plan was adopted on July 18, 2005.

ACTION: The council voted unanimously to approve.
