Man charged with attempted assault

Dennis Wilbur Marquardt, 25, of Bemidji, was charged Tuesday with attempted second-degree assault, a felony, for an incident that occurred on Saturday.

According to the criminal complaint, Marquardt's family members contacted police to ask for their assistance in getting him some help.

When police located Marquardt in the Paul Bunyan Mall parking lot, he allegedly threatened to commit suicide and said, "There are some (expletive) people I might want to hurt."

For the safety of the public, police officers decided to take Marquardt to North Country Regional Hospital, the complaint said.

But when officers told Marquardt of their plans, he refused. According to the complaint, Marquardt reached behind his back with both hands, exposing two knife sheaths. He also was holding a large black knife with a "very large blade" in his right hand.

Officers removed the knives from Marquardt and placed him under arrest for assault, the complaint said.

Marquardt was first transported to NCRH and later booked at Beltrami County Jail.
