Laverne Francis DesJarlait, 68, of Red Lake, died on Saturday, March 10, 2007, at Jourdain-Perpich Care Center in Red Lake.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the St. Mary's Mission Catholic Church in Red Lake with Rev. Pat Sullivan officiating. A wake will begin at 4 p.m. today at the Little Rock Community Center in Red Lake and will continue until the time of service on Wednesday at the church. Cremation arrangements are with the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.

Honorary pallbearers will be Louis Gurneau, Kyle Stillday, Willie Morrison, Harold Graves Jr., Mike Jourdain and Mike Branchaud Jr.

Pallbearers will be Nikko Garcia DesJarlait, Lydell Roberts, Gerald Kingbird Sr., Jerry King, Kenny Graves, Allen D. English Jr., Jeremy Strong and Nick Garrigan.

He was born on Aug. 18, 1938, to Solomon and Maggie (Waybenais) DesJarlait, in Red Lake. He was raised and educated in Red Lake, then attended some of his high school years in Duluth, Minn. After finishing school, he moved to Kansas and worked as a laborer, before moving to Chicago, Ill., in the late 1950s. In April 1965, daughter Peggy Ann was born. He moved to Minnesota in 1980, and eventually back to Red Lake in the early 1990s. For the last six years, he has worked at the Red Lake Seven Clans Casino.

He enjoyed gambling at the casino, car rides and watching the Chicago Bears and Cubs. He loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his daughter, Peggy Ann DesJarlait of Ft. Berthold, N.D.; son, Darwin "Doss" Maxwell of Red Lake; sisters, Eve (Mike) Beaulieu of Red Lake and Gloria DesJarlait of Bemidji; brothers, Leo DesJarlait Sr. of Red Lake, Myron DesJarlait of Kansas and Herb Mountain Sr. of Blackduck; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several adopted grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alfred DesJarlait, John DesJarlait, Simon DesJarlait, Francis DesJarlait, Art Schoenborn and Raymond "Joe" Roberts; and sisters, Loretta DesJarlait King, Lorena Hanson, Gladys Romero and Mary Meade.
