Vets divides pair with Moorhead

The Bemidji VFW divided its District 9 Conference twin bill with Moorhead Wednesday, winning the opener 6-1 behind Simon Anderson before dropping the nightcap 8-5.

It left Bemidji at 2-3 in district play and 3-5 overall. Moorhead stands 8-2 in the conference.

One inning decided each game.

Bemidji scored five times in the fourth of the opener to take a 6-0 lead and was never in trouble thereafter.

Moorhead scored five in the third of the nightcap to take a 5-0 lead, then widened a 6-5 lead with two final-inning runs to cement the victory.

Each side won behind a strong mound effort.

Anderson spaced six hits in the opener, fanning 13 and walking none. Bemidji backed him with errorless defense.

Sam Grantham limited Bemidji to three hits in the nightcap with defensive lapses hurting him in the sixth inning.

Anderson and Kyle Van Dyke locked horns in the opener with Bemidji holding a 1-0 lead in the fourth.

It scored in the third when Jon Clark walked, was sacrificed to second but held on Ryan Sullivan's long fly to right center which dropped for a double with Clark reaching third.

Alec Schulz scored him with a single.

Sol Schneider walked to open the fourth and Joe Trepanier was safe when VanDyke failed to handle his sacrifice bunt. Both advanced on a wild pitch and two walks sent Clark home.

Nick Lee hit into a force at home but Ryan Sullivan singled in two, Schulz singled in a fourth run and the fifth scored on a front end of a double steal.

Bemidji did not threaten again but the lead held up.

Anderson allowed singles to VanDyke and Grantham in the second and the same pair in the fourth. On each occasion he stranded them .

But in the sixth, Tyler Schlotfeldt opened with a triple off the right center field fence and VanDyke followed with a double to deep left center.

But Anderson got the next three stranding Van Dyke and set down the side in order in the seventh.

VanDyke finished with nine strikeouts and five walks. Schulz had three hits and Sullivan two for Bemidji. VanDyke had three and Grantham two for Moorhead.

Grantham and Sullivan matched deliveries in the nightcap which went scoreless into the third.

Then Moorhead exploded for seven hits which coupled with a walk for five runs.

Bemidji, which went down in order the first three frames, broke through in the fourth with Sullivan's single and two walks loading the bases with no outs.

Two runs scored on force outs.

But Bemidji came close in the sixth when Schulz struck out but reached when the third strike got loose at the plate. Anderson doubled and Sol Schneider's single sent Schulz home.

An error sent home a second run and a third scored on another force out.

But Grantham got the last out on a strikeout and set down the side in order in the seventh.

Grantham finished with 13 strikeouts and two walks. The two Bemidji hurlers had four strikeouts and two walks.
