Monrad "Monty" J. Peterson, 88, of Bemidji, died on Sunday, April 30, 2006, at Autumn Lane Assisted Living in Cohasset, Minn.

A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Solway Lutheran Church in Solway with the Rev. Linda G. Tenneson officiating. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home of Bemidji and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Solway Cemetery in Solway.

Pallbearers will be Jerry and Charlie Pulkrabek, Jim Peterson, Dale Sorenson, Tom Millar and Glen Huff.

Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Cary, Clair Pete and Donald Wahl.

He was born to Melvin and Pauline (Berger) Peterson in Syre, Minn. He lived in the Solway-Pinewood area while growing up. He graduated from Bemidji High School in 1936. He spent five years in the First Medical Regiment after being the first to enlist from Beltrami County. He served in the South Pacific/Philippines.

He married Marian Erickson of Solway on July 2, 1943, in Ashland, Ore. He attended Bemidji State, receiving a bachelor of science degree in Industrial Arts Education. He received his master of arts degree from Colorado College.

He taught and coached in Pequot Lakes, Minn., and Spring Lake Park, Minn., for 30 years. He liked to golf, fish and travel.

He is survived by his wife, of Cohasset, Minn.; daughter, Sue (Jerry) Pulkrabek of Grand Rapids, Minn.; two grandchildren; sisters, Irene Cary of Hibbing, Minn., and Florence Sletten of Fergus Falls, Minn.; brother, Harvey (Delores) Peterson of Bloomington, Minn.; a special nephew; and other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to Solway Lutheran Church building fund and Solway Cemetery Association.
