Bemidji attorney charged in drug case
Charles Powell, owner of Powell Law Firm, was charged on Monday in Beltrami County District Court on one count of felony fifth-degree controlled substance crime (possession of cocaine) and one count of gross misdemeanor domestic assault.
According to the criminal complaint, Powell, 50, of rural Bemidji, was charged as a result of an investigation by the Paul Bunyan Drug Task Force and Beltrami County Sheriff's Department.
At about 4 p.m. on March 24, officers arrived at the home on Country Club Road Northeast following a domestic assault emergency call.
Deputies reported in the complaint that Powell exhibited bizarre behavior ranging from rage to calmness in a period of a few seconds. They found drug paraphernalia, several baggies of marijuana and a substance that field tested positive for cocaine in the bedroom, according to the complaint.
Powell was taken to the Beltrami County Jail, but has since been released on his promise to report for his court appearances and other conditions set by the court.
Fifth-degree controlled substance crime carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine; gross misdemeanor domestic assault carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $3,000 fine. Powell has a previous conviction in 2003 for fifth-degree assault of a family member.
