Jacks draw No. 1 Elks as playoff foe

The Bemidji Lumberjacks boys basketball team, as ex-pected, drew the eighth seed for the Section 8-4 playoffs.

The Jacks open Wednesday at 7 at top-seeded Elk River in the upper bracket. The second game sends No. 5 Buffalo to No. 4 Moorhead.

In the lower bracket, No. 6 St. Cloud Tech plays at No. 3 Alexandria while No. 7 Brainerd goes to No. 2 Apollo.

The semifinals are scheduled Saturday night at Sauk Rapids. The final will be March 16 at a neutral site.

Bemidji was once challenging for a No. 4 or 5 finish after a nine-game win string at midseason raised its record to 10-5.

But it dropped eight of its final nine games to finish 11-13 and in the process lost its top scorer Nate Daniels for the final three games with an ankle injury.

Daniels is highly questionable for Wednesday's game.

Elk River is the Northwest Suburban Conference champion and finished 23-3 overall.

Of the other first-round opponents, Moorhead and Buffalo did not meet.

Alexandria beat Tech by 2 and 15 points while Apollo beat Brainerd by 4 and 21.

Elk River's only contact with a section foe was a 51-36 win over Buffalo.
