First Friday event set at Gallery North

BEMIDJI — Joan Wilson will be the showcase artist for the month with a First Friday Open House 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 6 at Gallery North, 502 3rd St. NW.

Wilson will have her plein air sketches in oil as well as rainy day studio sketches on exhibit.

The First Friday featured artists will be Colleen Hils and Patty Lovegreen.

Grant writing workshops planned

BEMIDJI — Several free grant writing workshops are set for American Indian artists who are interested in applying for an Anishinaabe Arts Initiative Grant, which has a deadline of Oct. 1.

•In Cass Lake, an informational table will be held to discuss grant applications one-on-one noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 11 at Cedar Hall at Leech Lake Tribal College, 6945 Little Wolf Rd. NW.

•In Mahnomen, a workshop will be held noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 13 at The Red Apple Cafe, 116 Main St. N.

•In Red Lake, a workshop will be held 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Red Lake Tribal Council Headquarters Building in the Library Archives.

•In Bemidji, a workshop will be held 6:30  to 8 p.m. Sept. 18 at Rail River Folk School, 303 Railroad St. SW.

All workshops will be held with Region 2 Arts Council staff.

The grant is open to American Indian artists residing in Beltrami, Mahnomen, Becker, Cass, Itasca, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods, Roseau and Clearwater counties.

Lyren to present lecture and recital

PARK RAPIDS — Del Lyren, professor of music and department chair at Bemidji State University, will present a recital and lecture 2 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Nemeth Art Center, 301 Court Ave., in Park Rapids.

The event is part of Lyren’s final project for the Region 2 Arts Council/McKnight Career Development Fellowship Award.

His grant proposal was titled “Learning Jazz Improvisation on an Electric Wind Instrument.”

The presentation will include Lyren performing what he learned in lessons with Jeff Coffin, saxophone player with the Dave Matthews Band and pictures and stories from his tour with the band.

The event is free and open to the public.

Concert series continues Sunday

BEMIDJI — Jerry Brademan will perform singalong music 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lake Bemidji State Park amphitheater.

Admission to the concert is free, but visitors must have a valid park pass. Day passes are $5.

The event is presented by Headwaters School of Music and Arts in collaboration with Lake Bemidji State Park.

Groove Kings to perform at dinner

CASS LAKE — The Groove Kings band will perform at the monthly walleye dinner 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Cass Lake American Legion.

Dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m.

Book signing with Steve Saari set

BEMIDJI — A book signing with Steve Saari for “This Long Trip to Myself,” will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 6 at Kat’s Book Nook, 750 Paul Bunyan Dr. NW.

The work, which was released Aug. 22, is a book of poetry with illustrations by Chris Arens and Julie Quanrud.
