Father, son from Fergus Falls suspected of murdering relative
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – Otter Tail County authorities say a father and son from Fergus Falls suspected of a drug-related murder of a fellow family member were arrested Monday night in Arizona.
Michael Alan Burris, the 64-year-old father, and Michael Kyle Burris, his 23-year-old son, are accused of killing Scott Burris, a 33-year-old who was the nephew of Michael Alan Burris, according to a news release from the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the news release:
Investigators say Scott Burris, whose van was found in a rural area north of Elizabeth on May 24, 2012, was last seen alive at the home of Michael Alan and Michael Kyle Burris in Fergus Falls two days before his van was found.
Investigators believe that Scott Burris was involved in drug activity with his uncle and may have owed him a substantial amount of money. They think he went to the 1115 N. Oak St. house to pick up drugs the night of May 22, 2012.
Authorities say the cellphone of Scott Burris went dead shortly after he arrived at his uncle’s home, and his van sat outside the residence until late that night, when it was moved.
Blood was found in the van, and Scott Burris was found dead in the Otter Tail River on June 15, 2012, a victim of a homicide by a single gunshot wound, an autopsy later found.
Investigators say that the father and son both lied to police during the investigation before moving from Fergus Falls to Mesa, Ariz., on or about April 12 of this year.
The men were located with help from sheriff’s deputies in Maricopa County in Arizona and are being held at the county jail there awaiting extradition to Minnesota.
