Lutgen pleads to sex charge

Jay Allen Lutgen, 20, of Bemidji, has pleaded guilty via an Alford Plea to third-degree criminal sexual conduct by force or coercion, a serious felony.

ST. PAUL – In a sign that state budget negotiations are not going well, Gov. Tim Pawlenty is looking at ways to fix a budget deficit if he and legislative leaders cannot reach an agreement by the Legislature’s May 19 adjournment date.

The Laporte community officially turns 100 in June, but the big celebration will be part of the ninth annual Laporte Days scheduled Aug. 8-10. The community is planning to recognize Laporte’s centennial and is also planning to hold a Laporte All-School Reunion.

Beltrami County wants help to keep ditches along its 390 miles of paved roads clean. Starting last week, the Beltrami County Highway Department launched an Adopt-a-Highway program, which asks organizations to volunteer to keep clean a 2-mile section of a County State Aid Highway segment.

John Magnuson wants to retire, so he’s selling his company, Magnuson Trucking & Leasing Inc., as of June 1. Magnuson, sole proprietor of the company that manages Beltrami County’s solid waste program, will turn over the operation then to Waste Management Inc., an international firm which reported $3.27 billion in revenues for the first quarter ended March 31.

Voters to face one question on school referendum on November ballot

The Bemidji School Board has agreed to ask voters one question in the upcoming operating levy referendum. At a special meeting Tuesday, the board voted unanimously to ask voters Nov. 4 to renew the current operating levy of $501 per pupil for another five years.
