4-H’ers participate in robotics tournament

BEMIDJI – Seventeen Beltrami County 4-H youth participated in the Regional First Lego League Robotics tournament Dec. 8 at the Northome School.

The group represented three teams from Beltrami County 4-H. The Division II team, “The Oldies,” was honored with the Judges Award at the tournament.

The mission theme for the 2012 First Lego League season was Senior Solutions. The mission: Can First Lego League teams improve the quality of life for seniors by helping them continue to be independent, engaged and connected in their communities?

Each challenge had three parts: the robot game, the project and the FLL core values. Youth participated with one coach in the challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (robot game), developing a solution to a problem they had identified (project), all guided by the FLL core values.

Financial gifts from Paul Bunyan Communications and the late Jim Heltzer help sustain the Beltrami County 4-H Robotics program.  The Headwaters Science Center provides space and technical support for the teams and the Science Engineering and Technology 4-H Club.

Demonstrations of the robots and aquatic robots can be found in the 4-H Robot Shack during the 2013 Beltrami County Fair.
