Work progresses on Bemidji Skate Park
The work we put toward getting a world-class skate park in Bemidji is showing results. This week I got my first look at the concept design of our skate plaza. The design is very impressive considering these concrete parks are pretty expensive and we have a limited budget. So far the $313,000 we have will get us a smaller park with lots of features. This is about half of our initial plan, which was for a larger $600,000 park. So in these final hours of fundraising, we are making one last push to get as much financial support as possible.November 20, 2009
Local Radiothon helps in lower child abuse stats
I would like to add to the article on why child abuse and neglect has reduced 37 percent since 2002 in Beltrami County — a great piece of news. While the Family Assessment Program has reduced substantiations, the annual Radiothon to End Child Abuse sponsored by the Paul Bunyan/Omni radio stations the first week in December is an important contribution to the reduction in child maltreatment.November 20, 2009
Real patriotism means ‘Buy American’ always
The current political climate is a remarkable thing. The flag-waving patriots who “want their country back” are completely missing the point on the key issues of our time. The economy (arguably our biggest woe), energy, environment, the very future of our country is at stake, and yet all of us are making a critical mistake: we’re fighting the wrong enemy — each other.November 19, 2009
Double-take when seeing kangaroo crossing Hwy 2
When leaving Bemidji on Saturday afternoon, to return home to Faribault after celebrating my mother, Doris’s, life in a memorial service, my wife, daughters and I had our eyes peeled for hunters and deer. We were heading toward Cass Lake when we spotted something in the median moving at a brisk clip. A dog, perhaps, no — a deer, maybe, but again, no! A kangaroo, yes, a sight during hunting season in Sydney perhaps, mate, but in northern Minnesota?November 19, 2009
The meaning of church more than just a building
I have read far too many articles and letters of condemnation, judgment and hatred and I can no longer be silent. I would like to clarify a specific terminology ... the church is not a building or organized religion, it is the body of Christ, which for those who are not versed in religion it means, the people who believe in Christ.November 18, 2009
Long-distance fan proud of Beaver football team
I reside in Seattle and just found out the Bemidji State Beavers are not going to play in the (post-season) tournament.November 17, 2009
Rep. Persell standing up for clean energy jobs
I found many things to disagree with in Mr. Allen’s recent (Oct. 18) letter that criticizes Rep. Persell’s support of clean energy legislation. Rep. Persell is standing up for Minnesota.November 17, 2009
Persell: Affordable health care for all isn’t socialism
It is likely not often that a life member of the Disabled American Veterans has the opportunity to receive a public lecture regarding the support and defense of our Constitution. But, that is what I received from Mr. Ken Cobb in his Oct. 18 cplumn directed to me and, the day after my wedding no less. Such is politics, eh!November 15, 2009
The church is community of saints and sinners both
I am responding to the letter to the editor (Oct. 28) asking for courage in dealing with the Bible. I am 70, conservative, grew up in a Christian family, the son of parents who read the entire Bible many times, based their lives on Jesus the Christ and were fine Christian witnesses. They did not speak of courage in their relationship with the Christ and his Word, but they treated it with respect, and, as I said, they dealt with the entire Bible.November 13, 2009
Contrary to Collins, Acorn is a bad influence
I read the column in the Pioneer this morning written by William Collins and it almost made me puke. Is this guy a card-carrying pinko or is he simply a wannabe? He talks about Acorn and how the young folks featured in a video trying to defraud our governor being just stupid and trivial.November 12, 2009
Why would County Board build road to nowhere?
What is the County Board’s hidden agenda? They voted 5-0 to spend $58,921 to build a road for a shooting park that they have not yet approved!November 12, 2009
Veterans may render a military salute all times
Veterans may render the military salute during the passing of the United States flag and during the playing of the national anthem. You need not be in uniform or covered. (Reference is the Defense Appropriations Bill, Section 594 and 595.) Also during the playing of taps the military salute by veterans shows honor and respect for the deceased.November 11, 2009
A better way to design Horace May entrance
The Horace May entrance onto U.S. Highway 71 presents a dilemma for our community. The plan presented by the Minnesota Department of Transportation would have all bus and car traffic from the school enter and exit via the Oak Hills Road.November 11, 2009
This is not the relationship our ancestors envisioned
I appreciate the publishing of the article concerning the Greg Paquin matter. As a resident of the city of Bemidji, and as a native American, I am sad to say that I can only support this confrontational approach toward this continual issue we, as native Americans, deal with every day living here.November 10, 2009
Federal stimulus funding not unlike a bad vaccine
So our granddaughter called this morning to say that she just had her H1N1 (swine) flu shot because she is doing a nursing practicum at the hospital. But she said her son, who is our great-grandson will not get a flu shot.November 08, 2009
