President Barack Obama, when he took office, promised to instill the highest ethical standards and bring utmost transparency to government. How the state Department of Natural Resources manages its lands has been a sore point for northern counties for decades. Now, the Minnesota Legislative Auditor’s Office, in a report issued late last week, finds that the DNR continues to buy up land for various reasons but lacks the resources and personnel to adequately mange them for their perceived purpose. Everyone is familiar with the procedure in the U.S. Senate that bills rarely move forward until they’ve been vetted for filibuster – an action needing 60 votes to close off debate and move to a vote. Pioneer Editorial: Jobs bill shows work can be done 
It wasn’t a large bill, but the jobs bill the U.S. Senate passed on Wednesday by a 70-28 vote, sending it to the U.S. House. The $15 billion measure in tax cuts and subsidies for local infrastructure bonds is no where near the $85 billion earlier envisioned by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, R-Nev., but it goes a long ways in proving that Democrats and Republicans can find common ground and pass something meaningful to help the American people.
