Patt Rall Arts Column for Nov. 12: Bemidji Symphony Orchestra to feature Tchaikovsky masterpiece

“Triumphant Tchaikovsky,” the second concert of the 2009-2010 Bemidji Symphony Orchestra season, will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, in the Bemidji High School Auditorium. Conductor Beverly Everett chose for her program a piece by a modern Soviet composer, Dmitry Kabalevsky, an overture of Colas Breugnon, “Master of Clamecy” and a choral prelude, “Wachet Auf” by Johann Sebastian Bach. The second part of the concert will feature a premiere of “Efflorescence,” a vibrant work influenced by late Romantic/early 20th century, impressionist and minimalist music. The work employs broad, sweeping melodies, interesting textures and repetitive rhythmic figures. Originally composed for a chamber orchestra, Everett requested a re-orchestration for the BSO. The composer is Joseph Adams who is at the McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul where he teaches orchestrations and music theory. Guest artist Stephen Carlson will play the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, opus 23 for the finale piece. Tickets are $15 for regular admission, $10 for students and seniors and Bemidji School District children will be admitted free. Tickets may be purchased now at Lueken’s Village Foods North or at the door the day of performance.

We're becoming the Waltons

Come this weekend, our household is going to expand again. One of my nephews will be moving in so that he can attend college here and he hopes that living with Uncle D will help him cut costs and get through school without a massive debtload. So that'll make myself, the two boys, Crazy G. and my ne

They're making a prequel!

"Garrett!" I said excitedly as I came out of the bathroom. "Did you hear? They're making a 'King Kong' movie prequel!" I was getting ready for work this morning and as I always do I was listening to a sports talk radio station. I heard on the station they were going to make a pr

Bubba doesn't dig the Kurosawa

One of Bubba's and my favorite activities when we get some one-on-one time is to watch movies together. Being an 11-year-old who possesses the maturity of a much-older teenager, my oldest son thinks most animated movies are pretty banal. But being the kind soul that he is, when it's the th
