Were Founding Fathers media socialists?
The Federal Communic-ations Commission’s chief diversity officer, Mark Lloyd, wants government to socialize the media. In his 2006 book “Prologue to a Farce,” Lloyd calls for a far-reaching government program that would straitjacket private media companies and funnel tens of billions of dollars into a tax-supported “public” media — an agenda shared by many of his associates.By Don Watkins , March 05, 2010
Pioneer Editorial: Time now for health care reform
The debate is done, it’s time to vote, President Barack Obama said Wednesday about health care reform. He’s right – Democrats and Republicans have argued over health care reform for a year and have nothing to show for that work. It came close, in December, but the switch of one seat in Massachusetts from Democrat to Republican stopped that plan dead in its tracks.March 04, 2010
Now playing in Washington: Trade warfare
Exports are essential to the prosperity of U.S. agriculture. You could say that trade is the backbone of agriculture since about 25 percent of the total volume of U.S. farm production is exported, and many U.S. commodities have even a higher dependence on world trade.By Bob Stallman , March 04, 2010
Legislative spending priorities skewed
The buzz in the hallways and committee rooms of the Minnesota Capitol during the first few weeks of the legisla-tive session has been fo-cused on health care for the poor and jobs for unem-ployed con-struction workers.By Phil Krinkie , March 04, 2010
Serious sanctions for Iran to stop nuke work
Iran has again rejected generous diplomatic offers and instead is expanding their nuclear program. The peaceful world does not have much time to get where we need to go — preventing Iran from getting nuclear weapons. Serious sanctions must be put in place to convince Iran to change their minds. The U.N. Security Council and key groups such as the European Union can peacefully stop Iran — but it must be done now.March 04, 2010
A safe haven for homes from seizure, taxation
So, now what? Republicans have failed. Democrats have failed. Neither political party has the courage nor the will to confront challenges with a clear and open mind. Special interests and self-preservation are the standards by which decisions are made.March 04, 2010
Pioneer Editorial: Short-term budget fix or long-term?
Now that Minnesota lawmakers have the latest budget forecast, they can roll up their sleeves and begin working on balancing the state budget.March 03, 2010
One-year remembrance of Red Lake’s Bill Blake
Thank you, Minneapolis Police Department, Chief Dolan and Mayor R.T. Rybak. As the Red Lake Nation readies to commemorate the life of one Minneapolis police officer Sgt. William “Bill” Blake, on Feb. 24 and 25 by hosting the 4th annual Drug and Gang Summit. We would also be remiss by not recognizing the amazing support and care provided to Bill by the Minneapolis Police Department, Chief Dolan and Mayor R.T. Rybak.March 03, 2010
Wealthy who say ‘raise my taxes, please’
President Obama has made it clear that he wants to erase the Bush-era tax cuts for the highest earners in the country, even as he preserves the tax cuts for middle- and working-class Americans.By Naomi Sobel , March 03, 2010
The faux health care summit?
The nation is focused on health care — again — as President Obama convened his highly touted and supposedly bipartisan summit last week.By Israel Ortega , March 03, 2010

Pre-census letter is a waste of government money
When I received a form letter the other day stating that I would be receiving a U.S. Census form in a few days, I was astounded that the government would do such a stupid thing. The country is in a recession and they go to the trouble and expense to generate a letter that could have been sent along with the Census form. What a total waste of our resources.March 02, 2010
Iranian threat needs to be thwarted with action
I am concerned over the issue of Iran continuing to build its nuclear weapons and planning to use them on innocent people not only of Israel but also here in our own country. The Israeli people have a God-given right to the lives that God gave them as do all of us. No one man should be able to say that they, whom God created, do not have a right to their own lives as others do.March 02, 2010
Pioneer Editorial: How can one senator block bills?
Everyone is familiar with the procedure in the U.S. Senate that bills rarely move forward until they’ve been vetted for filibuster – an action needing 60 votes to close off debate and move to a vote. But probably few people are aware of another procedural move in which one senator can virtually gridlock the entire Senate.February 28, 2010
Strange snow patterns consistent with climate change
Freak snowstorms plunged the nation’s capital and the rest of the mid-Atlantic United States into utter chaos in February. The federal government shut down for nearly a week, many schools turned President’s Day into an unexpected 10-day-long “snowcation,” public transportation ground to a screeching halt, and suburban power outages drove some families to burn furniture in their fireplaces to keep warm.By Janet Redman , February 28, 2010
