Impressed With China
Days before I left to go to China a liberal friend of mine said he was interested to see if my political views might change upon being in China. His angle was, "yeah, they're communist, but look at th...

Put Away That DDT
A recent letter to the editor in the Grand Forks Herald regarding environmental chemicals and their effects on our healthreally piqued my interest. I happen to know several families in the region affe...

Stop Telling Me What I Think
I am of the old school when the news was the news. Radio, TV, and newspapers told me what's going on: Who. What. When. Where. And occasionally why. Any good journalism class taught students what cons...

Why is information so readily available?
Well, well, well. We’ve got the Data Practices Act and we’ve got the Freedom of Information Act — and who knows how many other “Acts” are out there. But guess which one was obviously being enacted during the last couple of weeks of the Pioneer’s reporting on the saga of the 107 dogs. Seems to me that much of that info was of a very personal matter and yet it kept coming.February 08, 2012
Supreme Court fumbles return of personal privacy
I was thrilled to see this headline on the American Civil Liberties Union’s website after the Supreme Court’s unanimous Jan. 23 ruling on United States v. Jones: “Supreme Court GPS Ruling: Bringing the 4th Amendment Into the 21st Century” (aclu.org, Jan. 26). Wow!By Nat Hentoff , February 08, 2012

What would George Washington think?
While talking with a friend of mine, we happened upon an interesting topic that I considered worthy of mention. We asked, “What would George Washington think about the America of today?”February 07, 2012
Obama’s Catholic problem
“Religious liberty in our country is in jeopardy.” Catholics in the Washington, D.C., area heard those ominous words from their archbishop read during Masses last Sunday. With similar statements echoing through churches around the country, the Republican candidates for president have taken up the cry.By Steve and Cokie Roberts , February 07, 2012
Komen backlash is wrongheaded
To hear much of the American media tell it, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the breast-cancer charity that recently cut its ties with Planned Parenthood before (sort of) backing down, should simply be no more: It has gone from being a women’s health charity to becoming anti-woman, as the National Organization for Women’s president, Terry O’Neill, explained. She predicted to MSNBC host Ed Schultz that within five years or so it will cease to exist, and good riddance.By Kathryn Lopez , February 07, 2012
Pioneer Editorial: Take part in the process
Just as the football season is coming to an end with today’s Super Bowl, the political season is heating up, and Bemidji is receiving some extra attention this weekend because of it.By The Pioneer Editorial Board , February 05, 2012
Notify authorities if you suspect they’re hoarding animals
For her own welfare as well as the safety of animals, let’s hope that the Bemidji area woman who was reportedly keeping more than 100 dogs on her property receives the help she needs.February 05, 2012
Invoking GOP hysteria part of Obama’s strategy
To the extent that he ever believed much, if any, of his own soaring rhetoric about a transformative, post-partisan presidency during the 2008 campaign, President Obama would have to be judged a failure. Even after the election, his inaugural address called for “an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas that for far too long have strangled our politics.”By Gene Lyons , February 05, 2012
Hey, Canada. How about a trade?
There’s been a reversal of fortunes between Canada and America, and I’m not happy about it.By Tom Purcell , February 05, 2012
My PAC is ‘Destroy Our Future’
Newt Gingrich has a Super PAC called “Winning Our Future.” Mitt Romney’s is called “Restore Our Future.”By Donald Kaul , February 04, 2012
Salvaging Gingrich
I am somewhat mystified — and dismayed — by the spectacle of a lot of so-called conservatives who weren’t around in the 1980s dropping Ronald Reagan’s name to promote themselves while they go about slandering Newt Gingrich who, like my dad, was there in the ’80s and ’90s and also helped him elect more Republicans than anyone else in recent memory.By Michael Reagan , February 04, 2012
‘Buying Our Future’
Already, four of the top GOP presidential contenders have dropped out. Michele Bachmann went first, because she was too wacky, followed by Jon Huntsman, because he was too sane. Herman Cain gave up because he was too exposed, and Rick Perry because he was too dim-witted.By Jim Hightower , February 04, 2012
Wolves threaten deer and moose
I see by the Pioneer that the Department of Natural Resources says we have 3,000 wolves here in Minnesota now. Also the DNR says we need the wolves and tough winters to manage the deer herds.February 03, 2012
MAGIC in Minnesota
Officials and staff from Minnesota’s 87 counties believe firmly in the fundamental importance of strong, efficient and effective local government, but we also know that in many respects we are still the invisible layer of government to many of Minnesota’s citizens and also, unfortunately, at the State Capitol.By Randy Maluchnik , February 03, 2012
