Iranian threat needs to be thwarted with action 
I am concerned over the issue of Iran continuing to build its nuclear weapons and planning to use them on innocent people not only of Israel but also here in our own country. The Israeli people have a God-given right to the lives that God gave them as do all of us. No one man should be able to say that they, whom God created, do not have a right to their own lives as others do.

Failure to fix GAMC will put some hospitals at risk
The Legislature’s passage to restore partial funding to General Assistance Medical Care was the right thing at the right time. The bill has bipartisan support and offers a solution to an issue that both Democrats and Republicans agree needed to be addressed. We want to thank every legislator who voted to support the important safety net it protects. Unfortunately, the governor’s veto wipes out this short-term fix so desperately needed by our state’s poorest people.

Bemidji is a paradise! But we cannot allow any one person or party to live in it for free or gratis! Someone might want to evaluate the free services vs. the money coming in from taxes. Who is in charge of this?

Tea Party fight for liberty ought include gay rights
This is to all those avid followers of the newest political movement and probably fastest growing. I am not among you, but I do support some of the freedoms that you embody. I have researched the mission of the movement and attempted to grasp the ideals you all have joined forces to represent and I believe there are a few ideals that I challenge you to include in your fight for personal and fiscal liberties.

How can I express my anger? I would like to join the tea party patriots in their outrage except that they are raging against the wrong things. There is so much to be outraged against. But things are complicated and the patriots want simplicity. Things take time and they want immediate results.

Biodiesel industry woes continue, end subsidies
The EPA has announced that 2010 production of cellulosic ethanol will reach 6.5 million gallons instead of the 100 million gallons required by the 2007 Energy Independence and Securities Act. Another highly touted biofuel, biodiesel, is encountering similar shortcomings.

Concerns issued over Chippewa ATV closures
In the fall of 2008, the Chippewa National Forest closed the Woodtick Trail and hundreds of miles of roads to ATVs and other off-highway vehicles. Public hearings were held, but there was no publicity of the road closings in local media. The “NO OHV” signs went up and that was that (fines totaling $175).

Local spending decisions driving up property taxes
Pawlenty defended his math skills and said that local spending is driving Bemidji’s property tax increases. He was being kind. He could have told it like it is. The Bemidji event center is driving the property tax increases.

Hold VA responsible for vets’ care, not ‘partners’
Generally, partnership between states and the federal Veterans Administration has worked well. VA puts up two-thirds of the construction funding for a nursing home and pays a “per-diem” amount to the states providing long-term care. States have argued that the flat-fee per-diem amount is woefully low and not adjusted for different geographic locations, but northern Minnesota is hardly southern California or coastal Florida, in terms of care and living costs.

Strong-fisted unions hurt the economy, job losses
Ah! Unions, don’t you just love them? Last week’s antics at the BREC spurred me to write this letter. A couple of guys picket because a small contractor is non-union and 75 union “workers” walk off the job. Adding a separate entrance will make it all right. I wonder if they also need a separate lunchroom and bathroom. If transferred by bus, would the regular workers ride in the back? Is this prejudice, segregation or the elitist unions bashing of the common workingman?

American Indian issues belittled by the media
This is in response to the article pertaining to the GOP forum Tuesday night. It portrayed Nicole Beaulieu as unaware or uneducated of the negative and positive effects of the affirmative action policies of Minnesota. In fact, as native people and people socially victimized by these institutional racist hiring practices present here in our community, the law of affirmative action is our only outlet to speak out against our discrepancies of injustice.
