Patt Rall Arts Column for Feb. 24: Bemidji Jazz Quartet to launch new CD PressPass

Bemidji Jazz Quartet will debut a new CD in a concert/party from 7-11 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at Brigid’s Cross Irish Pub and Restaurant, 317 Beltrami Ave. N.W. Bemidji native and jazz guitarist Kevin Daley, along with Steve Konecne on woodwinds, Greg Gaston on drums and Patrick Riley on bass, produced “Standard, Volume One.” The group appears throughout the area during the year including “Art Fair at the Winery” at Forestedge Winery in Laporte. There is no admission charge for this event.

There's no way that bargain hunters can pass up the White Elephant Sale and fund raiser for the Beltrami County History Center this Saturday. The volunteers have been collecting the "gently used items" for months. There will be plenty of homebaked goodies for sale too. There was a picture from last year that I tried to paste into the blog but it wouldn't work so you'll just have to take my word that this event has many fine items for sale and perhaps for future gifting. Patt Rall Arts Column for Feb. 10: Weekend offers full range of entertainment PressPass

Valentine’s Day weekend offerings are sure to please every taste as the events include “Love Songs and Arias,” Bluegrass and Americana, a family trio and the return of “Seussical the Musical.” The show presents many Seuss characters like Horton the Elephant, Mayzie, Gertrude McFuzz, Sour Kangaroo and Cat in the Hat in a musical romp. Directed by Cate Belleveau and music director Suzy Jones, the show is a presentation of the Mask and Rose Women’s Theater Collective and performance times are 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Bemidji High School Auditorium. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets may be purchased at Brigid’s Cross Irish Pub and at the door beginning one hour before show times.

Patt Rall Arts Column for Feb. 3: Series to highlight culture of northern Minnesota PressPass

Common Ground, the new Lakeland Public Television weekly series highlighting the artistic and historical culture of northern and central Minnesota, will feature two well-known Bemidji artists this week: Christina Thorne of Bad Cat Creations and Josh Boock, a master potter who will explain his view of Southern Folk Art Pottery. The third exhibitor, Dick Carlson, will talk about the train depot in Nisswa. The show will be broadcast at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, and repeated at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, on local Lakeland Public TV channels. Common Ground is made possible by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Foundation.

Patt Rall Arts Column for Jan. 27: Piano, violin, cello trio to perform Friday PressPass

The Ahn Trio, an internationally known trio of three sisters, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, in the main auditorium of Bemidji High School. This is the first concert in the spring offering of the Bemidji Concert Series. The Korean-American sisters, who make up the trio, trained at the Julliard School of Music in New York City: Maria plays cello, Lucia piano and Angella violin. Their musical tastes run from the classical to crossover to alternative to rock, in short, something for everyone. The program will include works from modern composers like Chihara’s whose “Orchids” was commissioned by the Laguna Beach Music Festival, and Kenji Bunch and his “DanceBand,” which was commissioned by the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts. After the intermission, the performance will resume with Pat Metheny’s “Yu Ryung,” which was written for the Trio, “Song of the Land” by Ronn Yedidia, Michael Nyman’s “Big My Secret” and “Heart Asks Pleasure First” and David Balakrishnan’s “Tremors” and “Skylife.” Tickets are $20 for the general public and $5 for students and are on sale now at Lueken’s North and Tutto Bene.
