Persell climate change support will cost us all
This is in response to the letter by DFL Rep. John Persell . Whereas he has a wind generator at his residence, I am sure he has notified his electric suppler to remove the meter and service.

Agriculture remains key industry for Minnesota
Anyone who lives in rural Minnesota knows that agriculture is central to our way of life. We’re surrounded by fields and livestock, passing a tractor on the way into town is a regular experience, and virtually all of us either work in agriculture-related jobs ourselves or have family and friends employed in the industry.

Unharvested forest areas part of outdoors beauty
I have had the good fortune of living in this community for 26 years. When I used to come up here from Iowa to visit my in-laws, I never wanted to leave. I took me awhile to get here but I have never regretted the move.

Jobless recovery just another economic oxymoron
A jobless recovery is one of the newest in oxymorons in the economic lexicon. I feel much better knowing that banks, the stock market, insurance companies and some businesses are recovering. My question is at what point do we admit that without jobs there is no recovery for those who drive the economic machine.

Perspective of insurance industry needs to be told
The current health care debate is, without a doubt, one of the most important and challenging issues this country faces. To make solid, solution-focused decisions, we need policymakers in St. Paul and Washington who will thoughtfully approach these complicated subjects.

Baby boomers built the budget, now others’ turn
Baby boomers are budget builders! Boomers have paid in more taxes to Minnesota’s budget than any other generation in history. Boomers are just growing weary from carrying all the failed political programs out of St. Paul on their backs and now want to collect what they paid into all of their lives.

Nothing GOP, tea parties do is helpful to debate
GOP spokesman and tea party organizer Kenneth Cobb’s Pioneer columnof Oct. 18 was not helpful regarding the health care crisis in America. That’s not surprising, though, because nothing the tea parties or the GOP has done regardinghealth care has been helpful. The tea parties and the GOP have no plan to fix America’s health care crisis. Nothing.

Insurance industry only out to make more profit
Ken Cobb had some observations about health care reform and the Constitution. We have some observations about Cobb and what he calls “our insurance industry.”

October brings awareness of disability employment
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. NDEAM recognizes the employment needs of Americans with disabilities and the workplace contributions made by this community. This year, the Department of Labor’s theme is “Expectation + opportunity = full participation.”

Climate change is here
Global climate change is happening. Whether you believe it is perpetuated by human involvement or not does not matter. What does matter is there is a possibility that it is. The time to act is now!

No courage in watering down purpose of church
I am writing in response to the Pioneer’s Sept. 19 editorial from the St. Cloud Times “Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s decision an act of courage.”

Dig into the pipeline issue to get the whole story
At first glance, Enbridge’s pipeline currently in construction and scheduled to be finished by mid-2010 looks like a great deal, but do we really know what the benefits and costs of this pipeline are?

Using cancer to push a vegan diet wrongheaded
No one in his right mind would deny the importance of cancer prevention, but Krista Haynes’ cynical use of Breast Cancer Awareness Month to promote vegetarianism is just plain wrong. [“Lifestyle, diet changes can reduce breast cancer risk,” Oct. 7] The Cancer Project is an offshoot of the misnamed Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a notorious animal rights group. Neither one is a mainstream nutrition organization.

IRS: Deduction available still for new car purchase
The “Cash for Clunkers” program for new cars may have ended, but the IRS wants to remind taxpayers that many people might overlook another special break available. If you buy a new vehicle this year, there’s a special federal tax deduction available that can help you save money, in some cases hundreds of dollars. This tax break will allow people who buy a new vehicle in 2009 to deduct the sales and excise taxes they pay when they file their tax return next year. The tax deduction is available on the 2009 federal tax return even for those who claim the standard deduction.

Too much misinformation in health reform debate
I am writing in response to a letter to the editor appearing in Sept. 23 Bemidji Pioneer from Kristen Lopez Eastlick at the Employment Policies Institute in Washington, D.C. She is disputing the accuracy of the number of 47 million uninsured Americans being put forward in the debate over health care reform. I would like to make the following points.
