Big thanks to DNR naturalist John Fylpaa, assisted by Kathy, in hosting the Take a Kid Fishing event on Lake Bemidji on Feb. 14. It was a lot of hard work on a windy day, but those of us there had a great time. The tent setup helped out.

The average snow depth in the Bemidji area is about 16 inches, with more light snow possible this weekend. The conditions have been excellent for snowmobiling, with many miles of groomed trails and numerous lakes covered with snow available for riding.

Pioneer Editorial: Protecting Red lakes into future 
The state of Minnesota and the Red Lake Band of Chippewa on Thursday continued an important partnership in the preservation of Minnesota’s premier walleye fisheries. The two signed a new five-year agreement, which included the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, to jointly manage to maintain the health of the Upper and Lower Red Lakes fishery.

Last weekend most of the snow on the lakes had melted and anglers were briefly able to drive just about anywhere they wanted to on the ice. Now there is more snow on the lakes and bitter cold temperatures have returned to the Bemidji area.
