Pioneer Editorial: Where’s the Minnesota jobs bill?

A small step but an important step on the road to economic recovery took place Thursday as President Barack Obama signed into law Congress’ first jobs bill, one geared to help small businesses hire workers rather than providing subsidies to individuals.

Pioneer Editorial: National Broadband Plan a plus

It is becoming increasingly apparent that access to affordable Internet broadband is becoming the issue of the 21st century just as bringing electricity to all American homes was the issue of the early 20th century.

Pioneer Editorial: Bomb hits Bemidji on bonding list

Gov. Tim Pawlenty, in his veto message on the capital investment bonding bill, called the Legislature’s nearly $1 billion bill “highly partisan” and accused Democrats of failing to work with Republicans to gain their support. The bill, however, passed with Republican help, 89-44 in the House and 49-17 in the Senate.

Pioneer Guest Editorial: Open government records to Internet

Every day, the federal government releases vast amounts of useful information about every aspect of our nation and how government works. This public information has a deep impact on almost every aspect of American life. Some of it can be used to hold our elected officials accountable for their actions, or have a profound effect on health, economic development and commerce. The problem is, much of this government information is too often hard to find, difficult to understand, expensive to obtain in useful formats, and available in only a few locations.

Pioneer Editorial: House bans earmarks to for-profits

President Barack Obama, when he took office, promised to instill the highest ethical standards and bring utmost transparency to government. We’re still struggling to see both, but the U.S. House took a positive step forward Wednesday by banning the use of earmarks to steer direct federal subsidies to private companies.

Pioneer Editorial: DNR lacks land mgmt. resources

How the state Department of Natural Resources manages its lands has been a sore point for northern counties for decades. Now, the Minnesota Legislative Auditor’s Office, in a report issued late last week, finds that the DNR continues to buy up land for various reasons but lacks the resources and personnel to adequately mange them for their perceived purpose. That may include wildlife management areas, parks, trails and other natural areas.

Pioneer Editorial: Census may determine House seats

While the 2010 U.S. Census doesn’t officially kick off until April 1, Census workers are now taking forms out to more remote places. It becomes important – now if you get a form, and especially April 1 when you get one in the mail – to fill it out promptly and return it.

Pioneer Editorial: Primary on Aug. 10 will alter politics PressPass

Because of needing to conform with a new federal law, Gov. Tim Pawlenty signed into law earlier this week a bill moving the state’s primary election back, from Sept. 14 to Aug. 10.

Pioneer Editorial: Time now for health care reform PressPass

The debate is done, it’s time to vote, President Barack Obama said Wednesday about health care reform. He’s right – Democrats and Republicans have argued over health care reform for a year and have nothing to show for that work. It came close, in December, but the switch of one seat in Massachusetts from Democrat to Republican stopped that plan dead in its tracks.

Pioneer Editorial: How can one senator block bills? PressPass

Everyone is familiar with the procedure in the U.S. Senate that bills rarely move forward until they’ve been vetted for filibuster – an action needing 60 votes to close off debate and move to a vote. But probably few people are aware of another procedural move in which one senator can virtually gridlock the entire Senate.

Pioneer Editorial: Jobs bill shows work can be done PressPass

It wasn’t a large bill, but the jobs bill the U.S. Senate passed on Wednesday by a 70-28 vote, sending it to the U.S. House. The $15 billion measure in tax cuts and subsidies for local infrastructure bonds is no where near the $85 billion earlier envisioned by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, R-Nev., but it goes a long ways in proving that Democrats and Republicans can find common ground and pass something meaningful to help the American people.
