We can do more than remember our veterans
On Veterans Day in 1985, President Reagan spoke of those who laid down their lives for our country. “Most of them were boys when they died,” he said, “and they gave up two lives – the one they were living and the one they would have lived.”

Merger of benefit firms threatens rural care
As someone who has spent a lifetime in rural health care, I am writing because I’m strongly opposed to the planned merger between two pharmacy benefit management companies, Express Scripts and Medco. This is an issue that rural Minnesota and our elected officials like Sen. Klobuchar and Franken should follow very closely.

Minnesotans should keep riding our bikes all the way to the bank
Minnesotans should thank Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken for voting to preserve funding for biking and walking again last week. In recent weeks they voted against two proposed amendments (neither of which passed) that would have gutted Transportation Enhancements, the federal fund that is the source for much of our nation’s bike/walk infrastructure and safety improvements.

Where was federal government in Wisconsin union bust?
How much history does this idiot Gov. Walker want us to forget? The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, where 100 years ago, 146 people died in a fire for lack of exits? Republican Joe McCarthy from Wisconsin, who 60 years ago forever scarred the Senate with his anti-”commie” ramblings and persecutions? And Kent State, too, where 40 years ago Republican Nixon’s National Guard shot and killed unarmed protesters of Vietnam War, just as Walker wants to do with his protesters?

Pioneer Editorial: Push for U.S. steel is easy to embrace
When it comes to supporting Northeastern Minnesota mining, and assuring its future, some of our elected leaders are doing what many may have come to believe was the impossible — or, at least, the very difficult. They’re agreeing and standing together, despite their party-affiliated political chasms.

State ready to take over wolf management
As the Senate delegation representing northern Minnesota, we want to praise the federal government’s removal of grey wolves from the Endangered Species List. We have supported the removal because it is clear the wolf population in Minnesota has sufficiently recovered and no longer needs federal protection. In addition, we want to express our support for the Minnesota DNR to take over wolf management and we look forward to working with the DNR on plans for a hunting season on wolves.
