Alvin Bergman, 77, of Clearbrook, died Monday, March 8, 2010, at his home, near Clearbrook.

Alvin Bergman, 77, of Clearbrook, died Monday, March 8, 2010, at his home, near Clearbrook.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 11, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Clearbrook with the Rev. Bob Kirchman officiating. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, with a short prayer service at 8 p.m. at the Cease Family Funeral Home, in Bagley. Burial will be in the Augustana Lutheran Cemetery in Clearbrook with Military Rites by Melvin Johnson American Legion Post No. 256 of Clearbrook.

He was born Sept. 3, 1932, to Elin and Henry Bergman in Gonvick. He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith and was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Clearbrook. In 1953, he was inducted in the U.S. Army. He completed his basic training and was drafted into the SCARWAF (Special Category Army Reassigned with the Air Force). He received an honorable discharge from Fort Wolters Air Force Base, Texas in June of 1955. He farmed in Eddy township all of his life and served on the Clearbrook Creamery Board for several years. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 256 with a continuous membership for 54 years. He also served as Chaplain and Sergeant-at-Arms for several years. He loved baseball, whether it be playing, watching or coaching. He coached the Eddy Energetics 4-H softball team and along with Wes Westrum coached and spearheaded the Legion baseball team. He was the driving force in building the Wes Westrum Baseball Museum. In later years, he became interested in barbecuing. He and his friends competed in the World Championship BBQ in Memphis, Tenn. and earned quite a reputation for his ribs and pork sandwiches.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sybil; daughter, Sharon (Jerel) Johnson of Clearbrook; a son, Neal (Melissa) Bergman of Campbell, Mo.; five grandsons; a step-grandson; two great-grandchildren; brother, Erick (Arlene) Bergman of Clearbrook; sisters, Alice Forsberg of Fosston, Katherine (Paul) Vik Fridley, Minn., Doris (Richard) Terrill of Port Angeles, Wash. and Barbara Petersen of Bagley; a sister-in-law; a cousin and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl and George and sisters, Elsie Gale, Evelyn Tesmer, Marie Killberg and Amanda Bergman.
