Darlene Ruth Cloud, whose Ojibwe name is “Makoonce,” which means “Little Bear,” 63, of Ponemah, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at the Jourdain/Perpich Extended Care Center in Red Lake.
Darlene Ruth Cloud, whose Ojibwe name is “Makoonce,” which means “Little Bear,” 63, of Ponemah, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at the Jourdain/Perpich Extended Care Center in Red Lake.
Traditional Indian Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Ponemah Community Center in Ponemah. A wake will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Ponemah Community Center and will continue until the time of the funeral. Burial will be in the Family Burial Grounds in Ponemah.
Cease Family Funeral Home of Blackduck assisted the family with arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Maynard Cloud, Sr., Delwyn Cloud, Sr., Preston Spears, Sr., Dewayne Iceman, Kevin Martin, Sr., Ervin Iceman, Jr. with alternates Allen Cloud, Ryan Cloud, Roland Iceman Jr. and Lindsey Iceman.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Jourdain/Perpich nursing staff of Red Lake and the Ponemah Clinic staff.
She was born Sept. 25, 1946, to Robert and Alma (Spears) Iceman in Red Lake. She was a member of the Kingfisher Clan. She was raised and educated in Ponemah. She married Russell Cloud Sr. Nov. 22, 1966, in Ponemah. She worked at the Fire Hall in Ponemah. She also worked for Red Lake Comprehensive Health and later for the Ponemah Community Health Center as a Community Health Technician. She resided at the Jourdain Perpich Extended Care Facility in Red Lake for the last three months.
She loved being with her family and friends and taking care of her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, watching wrestling, going shopping, playing bingo and feeding hummingbirds.
She is survived by her husband; her children, Sharon (Dean) Cloud, Maynard Cloud, Janet (Preston) Cloud, Melissa Cloud and Russell Cloud Jr.; 19 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, Roland (Dolly) Iceman, Kenny (Olive) Iceman, Ervin (Sherilyn) Iceman, Darrell (Janice) Iceman and Ralph (Carol) Spears; sisters- Phyllis Iceman, Carol Martin and Priscilla (Bruce) Iceman; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Marilyn Cloud; brothers, Byron Iceman and Robert “Junior” Iceman; a sister, Rosalie Iceman; and a grandson, Wendell Roy Cloud.
