Mothers seek bus route changes

Blackduck School Board Chairman Dale Compton had barely opened the Monday night meeting when two mothers, neighbors living near Turtle River, asked for a chance to question bus routes that make their children spend as much as 10½ hours daily either in school or riding the bus.

The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra will be conducting a free workshop for children and adults, ages 8 and up, Aug. 5 from 2-4 p.m. at the Blackduck Community Library.

McKenzie and White to be married

Delaine McKenzie, daughter of Peter and Debra McKenzie of Gemmell, and Jesse White, son of James and Connie White of Northome, will be united in marriage July 31 at 5 p.m. at the McKenzie residence, 10913 Hwy. 71 in Gemmell.

Blackduck Apt. News

On July 14, Mickey Witt picked up Dee for some appointments and then went to Countryside for lunch. We have several new residents to welcome to our home — Edith Miller and Charlene Edin.

American Legion Auxiliary News

The July meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #372 was called to order by President Cory Schmit. The committees were called upon to make reports. The cheer committee has been sending cards and fruit baskets to those members that have been on the sick list.

Pathways Through Our Past

Summertime seems like it has been here forever and the summer activities are just getting started. Blackduck’s Woodcarvers Festival, along with the Community Ed’s craft fair, is just around the corner — July 31 and the Backwoods Bash, with it’s feature attraction, Sponge Bob Square Pants, will be here in no time — Aug. 21. Mark your calendars and spread the word that these are fun family events.

Lee Scholljegerdes, 96, died July 18, 2010 at her daughter’s home in Eau Claire, WI.

A letter from Lloyd Hoffman is always a day brightener and the latest is no exception. The former Kelliher resident, now living in Sauk Centre, remembers the many Saturday nights spent tuning in to listen to the National Barn Dance. It was a Chicago program carried on WDAY in Fargo.

Saum School to be 100-years-old in 2012

A few months ago, Dick and Nita Florhaug were going through some old papers, letters, etc. When they found an item that made them realize that the school had started in the big white consolidated school at Saum in September of 1912.

Kelliher School improves second consecutive year

For the second consecutive year, Kelliher School students have improved on math and reading test scores enabling the Kelliher School District to pull out of AYP.

Out with the old and in with the new

This fall, a new structure will be in place on top of the hill at the Blackduck Forestry Service Ranger Station. Because on ongoing necessary repairs, the bunkhouse used to house temporary forest workers was torn down and will be replaced.
