Mental Health First Aid Class

Upper Mississippi Mental Health Center will host a Mental Health First Aid course from approximately 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11 and Friday, Feb. 12, at UMMHC, 722 15th St. N.W., Bemidji. The 12-hour course is free of charge and open to friends and family of individuals with mental illness or addition, key professionals, school and college leadership, faith communities or anyone interested in learning about mental illness and addiction. The core program is tailored for response to the general adult population. Advanced registration is required. Space is limited to 25 participants. The goal of Mental Health First Aid is to increase mental health literacy and to help the public identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness. Participants will learn: --To recognize potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including: depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, eating disorders, substance use disorders and self injury. --Will gain an understanding of the prevalence of various mental health disorders in the U.S. and the need for reduced stigma in their communities. --A 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to assess the situation, to select and implement appropriate interventions, and to help the individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional care. --About evidence-based professional, peer, social and self-help resources available to people with a mental health problem.
