ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota House has passed a bill that prohibits unions from automatically deducting dues from state subsidy payments to child care providers, if they are ever allowed to unionize.
The House approved the bill 74-55 with mostly Republican support. GOP sponsors say it was in response to Gov. Mark Dayton's recent attempt to call a union election for home-based child care providers, which is on hold as a judge considers the issue.
House Democrats say the bill is premature since it's not certain if the unionization election will occur. A Ramsey County court hearing on the issue is set for Feb. 22.
Dayton did not directly threaten to veto the bill but says he believes Republicans introduced it for political reasons.
