Second City’s ‘Laughing Matters’ comes to Bemidji

BEMIDJI – Sketches, music and improvisational comedy comes to Bemidji today.

Second City’s "Laughing Matters" performance will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Sanford Center as entertainment for the Rotary Convention, but also for the general public.

Cyrus Pansch, director of sales and marketing at the Sanford Center, said bringing in the world famous comedy troupe along with the Rotary Convention made sense.

"We thought of what kind of show would be best for the Rotarians, what they would enjoy," Pansch said. "And for us, we wanted to be able to extend the show to the Bemidji community.

"Second City is a full-on show, it’s a comedy act. For me, it’s being able to provide a level of entertainment and kill two birds with one stone."

Second City is a Chicago-based sketch comedy theater that has been around for 52 years.

The show, "Laughing Matters," will consist of "the best mix of material from Second City’s 52 year history," according to Second City performer, Eddie Mujica.

He along with Alex DiGiacinto, Neal Dandade, Chelsea Devantez and Cate Freedman will be performing in tonight’s show.

"The cool thing about Second City is that for the people who are coming, they don’t know who the actors are right now, but you will in the future," Pansch said. "For the opportunity to see the next Tina Fey, Eddie Murphy or John Belushi, it’s a pretty cool thing."

The show incorporates comedy, skits and music, according to Mujica.

"It’s made up of scenes, both long and short, and music and singing," Mujica said. "The topics focus on relationships and other aspects of life that people can relate to."

The show also includes audience participation, Mujica said.

"People can come to the show and yell out ideas and we do improv scenes on those ideas. Those scenes are completely made up," Mujica said. "It’s a lot of fun, for us and the audience."

The shows run about 90 minutes with an intermission. Tickets can be purchased at the Ford Pickup Windows at the Sanford Center ticket office, any Ticketmaster retail location, Lueken’s Village Foods, charge by phone at (800) 745-3000 or online at Tickets for "Laughing Matters" are $20-$24.
