Pioneer Previews for October 21: Amber Joel to present recital today

BEMIDJI – Bemidji State University soprano Amber Joel will be welcoming the public to her junior recital at 3 p.m. today in Thompson Recital Hall of the Bangsberg Fine and Performing Arts Complex, 14th Street and Birchmont Drive Northeast.

“Minnesota Potters: Sharing the Fire,” a pottery exhibit with work by Richard Bresnahan, Robert Briscoe, Linda Christianson and Warren McKenzie, is on display now at the Talley Gallery, Bensen Hall on the campus of BSU. Adventures in Lifelong Learning fifth talk of the fall series will begin at 10 a.m. at the Community Room of Beltrami Electric, 4111 Technology Drive NW. Susan Joy, the new director of the Headwaters Science Center, will share the “Exciting Future at Headwaters Science Center. The original speaker, Riki Scheela, was unable to do her presentation and Ms. Joy agreed to substitute. This series is free and open to the public with a free-will offering accepted. The building is handicapped accessible with ample parking.


Northern Exposure to Lifelong Learning fall lecture series continues with Kevin Cease, “The Life and Times of a Third Generation Funeral Director” beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 703 Main Ave. N, Bagley.

These programs are offered free of charge and memberships are available at various levels.


The Army Concert Band and Soldiers Chorus will perform at 7 p.m. at the Sanford Center. Free tickets are available at First National Bank Bemidji, the Bemidji Pioneer, Paul Bunyan Broadcasting (corporate sponsors along with Coca Cola of Bemidji) and the Ford Pickup Windows at the Sanford Center.


Region 2 Arts Council is inviting those in the arts community to a Kick-Off Soiree from 7-9 p.m. at the Headwaters School of Music and the Arts. Please RSVP to or call 751-547.

Hairball in a Tribute to 80’s Rock Legends at 7 p.m. at the Sanford Center. Tickets in advance are $20 and $25 at the door. Order tickets through Lueken’s Ticketmaster locations, (800) 745-3000, and the Ford Pickup Windows at the Sanford Center.


Third annual Northern Town Hall Fall Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with local crafters and artists. Free admission.

BSU tenor Eric Bergsven will welcome the public to his senior recital at 7:30 p.m. in Thompson Recital Hall.


A “Thrown Paint” watercolor workshop with Marion Caroline Reil will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Gallery North, 502 3rd St. NW. Students will learn how the process of using thick paint flicked onto paper and then misted for explosive color. The class fee is $50 and all art materials will be provided (paint, paper, brushes, mask, miscellaneous materials and mats.) The class will be limited to eight people. Call 751-7741 for information.

The Blackduck Area History and Art Center TIN Pan gALLErY is now showing “Fantastic Fall” along with a collection of Boyd’s Bears owned by Bev. Gibson. The gallery is open 1-4 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Main and Margaret Streets in downtown Blackduck. This exhibit will be up through October.

BSU Wind Ensemble/Jazz Band will perform at 3 p.m. Oct. 28 in the Main Theater of Bangsberg Fine and Performing Arts Complex. Tickets at the door: $5 adults, $3 senior citizens and free for BSU students.

The “Oxcars” Awards celebration to recognize the work of non-professional regional theaters will begin at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 17 with a social hour and hors d’oeuvers at the New City Ballroom. Tickets are $10 and on sale now at Brigid’s Pub in downtown Bemidji.
