Pioneer Previews: First Friday Events with KBXE open house

KBXE and the Northern Community Radio Board of Directors are hosting an open house celebrating the opening of the new Bemidji KBXE station from 5-7 p.m. Friday at 305 American Ave. NW. The general public is welcome to attend. For more information, call (800) 662-5799.

Registration ends Wednesday for Diana Collison-Jones' copper tooling classes on April 14 and 28. Course registration is $40, and can be completed at Gallery North, or by contacting Diana at 556-6738.

The third annual Opener Art Festival's booth registration is now open. The festival will be Nov. 3 at the Sanford Center. The fee is $75 for a 10' x 10' booth plus $15 processing fee. Nature artists are invited to take part in the 2012 Lady Slipper Celebration art walk "Art Around Town" in Blackduck June 23. The event will celebrate the arts, culture, nature and history of the Lady Slipper Scenic Byway that stretches from Blackduck toward Cass Lake. Registration for the event is $20, and ends May 15. The Rail River Folk School presents The Northwoods Folk Collective with host Drew Warne-Jacobsen. This open-stage event will offer participants the opportunity to share stories, music, poetry and other performance art. Sign-up is 6:30-7:30 p.m. April 6 with performances afterward. Rail River Folk School is located at 303 Railroad Street SW.

The Fleur de Lis Gallery is displaying new work by DeeJay Arens, and will be open 2-6 p.m. for First Friday.

The Bemidji Community Art Center invites the public to its opening of the 12th Annual Bemidji Area High School Invitational from 4-6 p.m. Friday. The exhibit features work from area high school students in all mediums, and is part of the First Friday Art Walk. Attendees are encouraged to vote between 4-5:30 p.m. for the People's Choice Award artist, with the student winner to be announced at 6 p.m. Food and refreshments will be served.

Collyer Visuals, a local collaboration between Leigh Collyer and Ron Schrader, will be featured at the Bemidji Public Library's Art Wall. The work blends fine art with practical design, custom fabrications and model-making techniques supported by graphic design, commercial photography and analog or digital illustration. An opening reception will be from 3-5 p.m. Friday at the Library.

The Center for Therapeutic Arts will present artist Jake Baggenstoss for the month of April. Baggenstoss works within the realm of bright, acrylic food-related paintings for this exhibit. The First Friday opening reception for Baggenstoss will be held 4-5 p.m. at the Center, located at 521 Minnesota Ave.

AJ Dombeck will be Dunn Bros. Coffee's featured artist for the month of April. Dombeck has been capturing wildlife images in the Bemidji area for three years, and will present a wildlife collection at his opening reception for First Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Dunn Bros.

Freaxis Studios invites the general public to its First Friday event from 4-6 p.m. In coordination with the High School Invitation upstairs at the Bemidji Community Art Center in the Carnegie Library, Freaxis will show additional work by TrekNorth High School's AP art class. Poster art by Skidmark will be shown in the green gallery, and at 6 p.m., there will be a Poetry Out Loud performance followed by a rod-and-shadow puppet show by Fortuna Puppet Theater. Refreshments will be served.

"Trail Watch," a photographic exhibit by Barb Meurers featuring images captured along the Paul Bunyan Trail, will be featured at Glazed and Amused for the month of April. Meurers' First Friday opening reception will be 7-9 p.m.

Artists Kathy Gustafson and Pat Shough will have a combined show entitled "Flora and Fauna" at Neilson Place, to be on display through the end of June. Their First Friday opening reception will be 3-4:30 p.m. with an artist talk at 3:30.

Wild Hare Bistro and Coffeehouse will present a "Free Tibet" art show, with artwork by Raven Clark and Malisa VanMaasdam and other selected artists. The opening reception will be 3-5 p.m. as part of the First Friday Art Walk.

Kendra Fuller will return to the Cabin Coffeehouse with works of past wall-finishing projects with new elements for the month of April. The coffeehouse is open 7:30 a.m.-8 p.m. daily.

Headwaters School of Music and the Arts will host an exhibit by artists of Studio 10. An eclectic mix of subjects and media will be on display during regular business hours at the school.

Local author and speaker John Eggers will talk about his recent book at 7 p.m. April 9 in the Bemidji Public Library.

Saarens Productions' fourth Independent Film Night featuring films produced by local filmmakers will be at 7 p.m. Friday in the Wild Rose Theater, Bemidji. The suggested admission price is $5. Audience members will have the opportunity to vote for the films they think should progress to the second annual Fathom Film Festival scheduled April 20-21 at the Wild Rose Theater.

Common Ground program explores the creative process and cultural events in our region. On this week's episode, Sue Leagjeld shows the keys to raising and training show quality ponies. Also, audiences will get a lesson in wood working from Duane Tollefson as he crafts hand-made coffins. The program broadcasts at 7 p.m. Thursday and be repeated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, 6 p.m. Sunday and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Bemidji Woodcarvers' Club meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Paul Bunyan Senior Activity Center. Beginning, intermediate and expert carvers welcome to attend. Cost is $2 a session.
