Pioneer Previews: Holiday musical offerings coming to end

Bemidji State University Varsity Singers will present their annual Holiday Concert at 3 p.m. today at Thompson Recital Hall of Bangsberg Fine and Performing Arts Complex, 15th Street and Birchmont Dr. on the campus of BSU. Admission is canned goods for the Bemidji Food Shelf.


Today is the final performance of Bemidji Community Theater and the Paul Bunyan Playhouse new adaptation of a timeless classic, "Christmas Carol" at the historic Chief Theater in downtown Bemidji. This new interpretation by Chris Blackwood and Piers Robinson closely follows the original novel by Charles Dickens. Performance will be a 2 p.m. matinee. Tickets are $6 for children and $12 for adults and will be sold at the door. A non-perishable food donation for the Bemidji Food Shelf brought to the theater the day of performance will get a $1 refund on a ticket. This activity is made possible, in part, by a grant provided by the Region 2 Arts Council through funding from the Minnesota State Legislature.

"Fruitcakes" written by Julian Wiles will be on stage at 2 p.m. today at Longlake Theater in Hubbard. A family show about a 12-year old runaway boy who finds a place in the hearts of the "nuttier than fruitcakes" residents of a small town at Christmastime. Tickets are $14 adults, $7 ages 4-12 and free for lap sit children; groups of 15 or more are $12.50 per adult. Ticket reservations at or buy directly at Beagle Books in Park Rapids.

Northern Artists

The Northern Artists Christmas Party will be held at 11 a.m., Monday Dec. 12 at the Eagles Club. Bring a Christmas ornament (bought or handmade) to exchange, a desert to share, a spouse or friend. The public is invited to attend.

Community Party

The McKeown Family Band's Second Annual Christmas Party Hop will welcome to the public from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 23 at the Old Lincoln School Gym, Mt. Zion Church, Fourth St. and Lincoln Ave. Admission is a plate of goodies to share.


Shadowbox Theatre Class with Margaret Burger. Tell a story with "Shadowbox Theatre," an imaginative toy theatre form that awakens in the dark of winter. Create cardboard characters, props, and scenery to move and talk your shadows to life! Classes are from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Wednesdays Dec. 14 and from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturdays, Dec. 17. Each workshop is $5 per person for ages seven and up; sign up a few classes or a series by calling HSMA at 444-5606 or stop by to register in person.

"Winter Wonderland" at 1 p.m. Saturday. Dec 17 at Gallery North with Marion Reil. Students will paint a watercolor winter nature scene of their choosing or a study will be provided. Participants will paint a winter landscape "playing with snow" using a variety of watercolor methods. Students will complete and mat a 16 inch by 20 inch picture. Class fee is $45. All materials are provided. Registrations taken at Gallery North. No experience necessary.

Beltrami County History Center in conjunction with Gallery North presents "Fall Reflections," a collection of works celebrating autumn.The newest exhibit "Beltrami County in Mark Twain's Time" explores the happenings in Beltrami County during Twain's life time (1835-1910). Brigid's Cross Irish Pub and Restaurant (317 Beltrami Ave.) will be hosting painter Gabriel Nordby and his work for the month of December.

Cabin Coffee House and Café is presenting outdoor photographer Todd Geiger and his year in review show for the month of December. The Cabin is open seven days a week at 214 Third St.

Center for Therapeutic Arts (521 Minnesota Ave.) will present Malisa R. Van Maasdam and her mixed media exhibit "A-Z," a contemporary approach to the alphabet with strict lines and sharp contrasts.

Gallery North is hosting its annual Christmas Boutique with a variety of artwork and fine craft from member artists. Gallery North is located in the shops at the foot of the Irvine Street Bridge at 502 Third St.

Glazed and Amused is showcasing the work of Norma Frisk and Sue Smith for the month of December. Glazed and Amused is a paint-your-own ceramic studio which features a wide variety of pieces to paint, functional to decorative. They are located at 311 Third St. and open Tuesday through Saturday.

Headwaters School of Music and the Arts (521 Minnesota Ave.) is hosting Alice Blessing and her exhibit "Miss Shapen," a series of paintings about the relationship of toddler beauty pageants to real life.

Neilson Place (1000 Anne St.) is welcoming Melissa Moss of Blueleaf Photographs and her exhibit, "Serenity" until the end of the year. A price list is available at the front desk.

Northwoods Gallery (218 Third St. NW) featured artists are Jane Freeman, Don Houseman and Terry Honstead.

Wild Hare Bistro and Coffeehouse (523 Minnesota Ave.) will host the work of photographer Cal Rice, prints of the flora and fauna of Costa Rica, until January 4.

Dunn Bros Coffee will be hosting Tom Dunn, an internationally award winning photographer, and his black and white images from travels abroad and in Minnesota for the month of December. Dunn Bros is open seven days a week at 501 Paul Bunyan Dr. S.

Fleur de Lis Gallery located in the Wild Rose Theater (501 Bemidji Ave.) has local and regional artists now showing in the gallery. The gallery is open any time the sign is outside the building.

Ongoing events
