Pioneer Previews: Tickets available for Sankta Lucia Fest

Tickets for the 36th annual Sankta Lucia Fest will be sold until Friday at Kelsey's and Ken K. Thompson in downtown Bemidji.

Cost is $18 for adults and $6 for children six and under. The doors open at 5:30 a.m. for the 6 a.m. start when Jeanette Armstrong, this year's Lucia, will enter the Beaux Arts Ballroom wearing a crown of candles to welcome the sunrise.

Always held on the morning of Dec. 13, Lucia and her attendants will arrive after the blowing of the horn in the darkened ballroom. Candles will be lit on the tables, people will enjoy the traditional Lucia buns made by members of the Bemidji affiliate of the American Swedish Institute, followed by a breakfast smorgasbord of Swedish foods. No tickets will be sold at the door. The Beaux Arts Ballroom is located in Hobson Memorial Hall on the campus of Bemidji State University.

Common Ground

A program that captures the creative process of various artists living in our region, Common Ground, takes the viewer inside the cultural events of the North Country.

This week's episode will showcase Sherly Gormley of Backus, who will display the many facets of fiber art and her angora rabbits. There also will be a glimpse at the Bemidji Book Fair, where authors met with the public, and an author of cookbooks, Amy Theilen, will share how she styled and photographed pictures for her cookbook.

All episodes are shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, 11:30 a.m. Saturday, 6 p.m. Sunday and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.


Bemidji Community Theater and the Paul Bunyan Playhouse present a new adaptation of "Christmas Carol" at the historic Chief Theater in downtown Bemidji. This new interpretation by Chris Blackwood and Piers Robinson closely follows the original novel by Charles Dickens. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Tickets are $6 for children and $12 for adults at Iverson Corner Drug and Ken K. Thompson Jewelry at the Mall. A non-perishable food donation for the Bemidji Food Shelf brought to the theater the day of performance will get a $1 refund on a ticket.

"Fruitcakes" written by Julian Wiles will be on stage at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Longlake Theater in Hubbard. A family show about a 12-year old runaway boy who finds a place in the hearts of the "nuttier than fruitcakes" residents of a small town at Christmas. Tickets are $14 for adults, $7 for ages 4-12 and free for lap sit children; groups of 15 or more are $12.50 per adult. Ticket reservations at or buy directly at Beagle Books in Park Rapids.

Library Book Club

"Cold Mountain" by Charles Frazier will be the next reading for the book discussion at 7 p.m. Thursday. Extra copies of the book are available at the Bemidji Public Library.


The Blackduck History Center and Art Gallery will be welcoming visitors to the center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday for their annual "Cookies by the Pound" fundraiser. Traditional specialty items will be available for as long as they last. The center's gift shop and displays will be open during the fundraiser.


Bemidji Middle School Orchestra Concert will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday in the Choir Room 4119 performance area of the Bemidji High School Performing Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public.

Tree Party, an Indie Rock Band that draws from classic country artists and complete with steel guitar and yodeling, will perform at 9 p.m. Friday at Brigid's Cross Irish Pub and Restaurant, 317 Beltrami Ave.

Clearwater Hot Club, a gypsy style jazz ensemble, will be performing from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Brigid's Cross Irish Pub and Restaurant.

Timberline with John Essig, Kari Munson, Dave Sand, and Don Leet will play from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Eagles, 1270 Neilson Ave.

Bemidji State University Varsity Singers will present their annual Holiday Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at Thompson Recital Hall of Bangsberg Fine and Performing Arts Complex, 15th Street and Birchmont Drive on the BSU campus. Admission is canned goods for the Bemidji Food Shelf.

Christmas party

The Northern Artists Christmas Party will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Eagles Club. Bring a Christmas ornament (bought or handmade) to exchange, a desert to share, a spouse or friend. The public is invited to attend.
