DeKrey Scholarship Concert scheduled

The 24th annual DeKrey Scholarship Concert, an event celebrating the life of Bemidji State University alumna Ione DeKrey will feature Bemidji State University student vocalists in a competition beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 27, in the Thompson Recital Hall of the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex on the Bemidji State campus.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Competition for the DeKrey Memorial Vocal Music Scholarship is open to vocal music majors who have maintained high academic standards. Since its inception in 1986, the DeKrey Award has supported 49 young vocalists with about $30,000 in scholarships. The 2010 competition will award $1,000 scholarships to each of the top three finishers immediately following the contest, marking the third year that the contest has awarded three scholarships in a single event.

A wide variety of musical styles will be featured in the concert, including arias, arts songs and musical theater selections.

Participants in the 2010 DeKrey Scholarship Contest include Eric Benson a senior from Duluth, Minn.; Erik Bergsven, junior, from Bemidji; Amanda Boring, freshman from Lenexa, Kan.; Nate Chesney, senior from Bemidji; Emily Cooper, freshman from Chandler, Ariz.; Nicholas Dahn, sophomore from Park Rapids; Anna DeJong, freshman from Coon Rapids, Minn.; Mattea Elhard, sophomore from Bemidji; Alex Ferderer, freshman from Bismarck, N.D.; Jessica Jacobson, sophomore, Coon Rapids; Amber Joel, freshman from Badger, Minn.; Lauren Skarloken, freshman from Deerwood; Anna Smith, sophomore from Grand Forks, N.D.; John Stewart, junior from Blue Earth, Minn.; Charlie Stier, sophomore from Bemidji and Shelby Thorstad, freshman from Ray, Minn.

The three winners of the 2009 DeKrey competition, Ashley Bremseth, a senior from Fergus Falls, Minn., Angela Hesse a senior from Comfrey, Minn. and Mathew Verbout a senior from Grygla, Minn. will also perform at the concert.
