Gothenburg Combo: Guitar duo to perform in Bemidji Concert Series
Guitar virtuoso performances have been popular among Bemidji music lovers, so two guitars in concert might be even more attractive.
That was the thinking Del Lyren and other members of the Bemidji Concert Series search committee had as they were putting together the playlist for the 2009-10 season. The result is the Gothenburg Combo, guitarists David Hansson and Thomas Hansy, who will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in Thompson Recital Hall in the Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex at Bemidji State University.
"We saw them online, and they looked really interesting," Lyren said. "Another reason we were interested in them is they're from Sweden and we have such a Swedish interest here."
Bemidji is home to an affiliate of the American Swedish Institute, and many area people claim a Swedish heritage.
Lyren said people of the Bemidji Area like to try their command of the Swedish language on visiting musicians from that country.
Lyren said the program the Gothenburg Combo will present Friday offers a wide variety of music, much of it specially arranged by the guitarists and some of it their original compositions. Lyren said the duo also include storytelling in their performances.
Friday's concert will feature classic guitar pieces, such as "Danza Espanola No. 1" by Manuel de Falla and "Clair de Lune" by Claude Debussy as well as arrangements of Beatles songs, George Gershwin and traditional Swedish folk music.
Regular season tickets and membership packages are available at the music office on the second floor of Bangsberg Hall, Lueken's Village North and Tutto Bene. All three ticket outlets will also sell individual event tickets at $20 for the general public and $5 for students for this performance. If available, tickets will also be sold at the door prior to the performance. This series is supported by sponsorships from the BSU Department of Music, The Bemidji Pioneer, The Villa Calma Bed and Breakfast, Paul Bunyan Telephone and the BSU Student Activity Allocation Committee.
